Controversy surrounding the visit of Pope Benedict XVI for the Roman Catholic Church promotional event that is World Youth Day, and Cardinal George Pell's unsatisfactory response to yet another sexual abuse victim, has again focussed attention on the Church's problems. These are not the direct fault of the ordinary members of the Church. Responsibility must be directed firmly at the Pope and other Catholic leaders. Lay Catholics, however, might be able to help.

The Catholic Church, while professing good intentions, has a less-than-exemplary history; being responsible for arguably more deaths than any other organisation. Millions have died and suffered in the name of the Church in crusades, witch hunts, the Inquisition, and numerous religious wars.

Jews, women, homosexuals, heretics, scientists, and whoever might have had a view contrary to that of the Bible or the Church were persecuted or subjected to Catholic fury. Not quite consistent with ''thou shalt not kill'' and ''turn the other cheek'. It would be reasonable to think that Pope Benedict XVI might have learnt lessons from this history and that he should not be a party to the suppression of free speech, but he hasn't.

The Inquisition was established to suppress opposition to the Pope, yet now, the Pope is protected, by virtue of draconian NSW regulations, from people who might express a view that could annoy pilgrims or him at World Youth Day. Why should pilgrims be shielded from hearing alternative views and forming their own judgements?

The Pope heads a Church based on biblical teachings of a God. This allegedly benevolent God is jealous, murderous (not many were left after Noah's flood, and he certainly had a dislike for the first borns in Egypt; yes, the biblical God is a child killer), sexist (the strongly misogynist theme in the Bible and Church is hard to ignore), racist (there is but a slight bias for the Israelites over the Egyptians), pro-slavery, and homophobic. The Pope would fail to win a job in the public service as an advocate of such vehemently discriminatory views.

Let's face it, the biblical God is probably a manifestation of the superstitious views of the uneducated masses two millennia ago, and the Church's attitudes to social issues have hardly changed since then.

Despite public and lay support for sex before marriage, abortion, the contraceptive pill, voluntary euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research, the Pope continues to oppose them. Disturbingly, the Pope and Church leaders seem to thrive on arrogantly imposing their divisive religious views on others. This is borne out in their strong opposition to the use of condoms where, particularly in Third World countries where Aids is rampant, this stance has been tantamount to a death sentence for many.

The Pope and Church leaders propagate, in Richard Dawkins's words, the God delusion. There is no credible evidence, scientific or otherwise, for God, heaven, hell, prayers being answered, or miracles occurring .

Prayer, or alleged miracles, cannot violate the laws of physics. No matter how the Pope and Church leaders pray for limbs to regrow on amputees, it just will not happen. The Pope and the Church have been able to get away with spreading such nonsense mainly through childhood indoctrination.

World Youth Day is no doubt intended to keep the myths alive.

The Pope presides over a Church suffocating in hypocrisy. Although the Bible proposes that you 'sell that thou hast, and give to the poor', the Pope and the Church are blessed with riches. Australian Catholics give money to the Church, but does anyone know where it all goes? A great deal of money will support World Youth Day, where the Pope will try to charm Catholic youth. No matter how charming he may be, he will be unable to erase the horror of the predatory sexual attacks on children by some Church leaders. One must wonder what sort of organisation the Pope is running.

Although the Church's substantial problems start at the top, the solution might be found at the bottom. It is incumbent on members of the Church to seek the truth, assess their own beliefs, challenge the Pope and Church leaders about the Bible, about Catholic social policy, and critically consider their Church leaders' responses. They will hear well rehearsed answers; after all the Church has had thousands of years of practice in indoctrinating the masses, and suppressing non-Catholic views. World Youth Day is an ideal occasion to start this dialogue. May reason win out.

World Youth Day!

Sydney-siders face 'unreasonable interference' during World Youth Day

Pope Benedict addresses a youth rally crowd

Draconian, repugnant and unnecessary. These are just a few of the criticisms of special regulations coming into force for the upcoming Catholic World Youth Day event in Sydney.

Civil libertarians and legal experts say the regulations could see situations such as someone deemed to be wearing an offensive T-shirt being arrested and given a hefty fine.

New South Wales Police say the measures are designed simply to ensure that World Youth Day is a peaceful and happy event.

The event runs from July 15 to July 20, but from today until the end of the month the regulations come into force.

Under the regime SES and Rural Fire Service volunteers will assist police in bag checks at World Youth Day locations.

And anyone deemed to be causing annoyance could be arrested and fined up to $5,500.

New South Wales deputy police commissioner Dave Owens says the regulations do not restrict democratic rights.

"If people wish to lawfully protest, we will facilitate those protests as long as they are law abiding," he said.

"Police officers always maintain a discretion, and I expect them to use that discretion."

There have been suggestions that people could be arrested if they wear a T-shirt that promotes the use of condoms. Mr Owens refused to rule that out.

"There are individual circumstances that will have to be dealt with individually," he said.

'Repugnant'

President of the New South Wales Bar Association Anna Katzmann says she does not understand why the regulations have been brought in.

"They are repugnant for two reasons," she said.

"First of all the Government has by-passed the normal parliamentary scrutiny that would be available if they were introduced by an Act of Parliament," she said.

"Secondly they are an unreasonable interference with people's freedom of speech and movement."

She says there is a chance people could be arrested for trivial offences in the areas that have been declared as special World Youth Day zones.

"These World Youth Day-declared areas are numerous and they encompass places like Sydney University and the Opera House. Places that you and I would travel to regularly, not just churches or church schools," she said.

New South Wales Council of Civil Liberties president Cameron Murphy says he is opposed to the proposed measures.

"A police officer may find someone's T-shirt annoying and on that basis issue them with a fine," he said.

"That sort of thing is likely to escalate any problems that occur rather than prevent them."

The Greens have joined civil libertarians and the Bar Association in calling for the regulations to be cancelled.

ProChoice- No Choice At All

July 3rd 2008 00:33
I was amazed to stumble upon ProChoice.com, a website that by name one assumes would provide information to mothers considering or supporting abortion.

The information within this site is nothing of the sought, and it wouldn't surprise me if it is funded by a church group!

Here's a quote from the site;

Abortion... What is it?

Abortion is human intervention that does not allow a developing child to be born.
It is the death of another less developed human being.

Imagine feeling safe and the next moment someone is killing you and you can't get away or cry for help.

Is this site preying on women at a most vulnerable point in their lives? It certainly doesn’t provide them with unbiased information or support.

I am all for providing women considering an abortion with alternative options, however I think each option should be given an equal weighting and left up to the woman to decide.

THIS SITE IS A ROUGHT!

In Australia, the legal age for both drinking and driving (though not simultaneously of course), is 18.

*cough* Just to clarify... You get your learners (L's) at 16 in Aus, and your Provisional Licence (P's) at 17... and the drinking age is 18...

on an apple a day

God you’re an antagonistic bitch sometimes… =)

I wonder if there has or will be an age limit applied, so that minors will not be subjected to this scan… not that I have kids, but if I did I probably wouldn’t want some seedy looking customs officer visually undressing them!

Has Henson made a formal statement yet? Perhaps we’re all just jumping the gun, without enough information to make an informed determination on the matter at hand.

Artists often pave the way for social change by highlighting controversial issues relevant to the times. Perhaps this was Henson’s intention?

I don’t personally see Henson’s depiction of children as pornographic or explicit in nature, however who is to say that Henson’s images are not inciting unsavoury behaviour in paedophiles?

I do not think it fare to blame Henson for the paedophilic behaviours that have existed in society as long as our society has existed, nor do I blame McDonalds for child obesity.

It comes down to what we are prepared to live with as a society today, and I fear that for the majority of people being blissfully unaware of something is a good a solution as any.

Henderson, in my opinion, is being used as a scapegoat for the Australian government who are under increasing pressure to prevent child sex abuse. Henderson merely represented a PR opportunity for the commonwealth, a government happy to pose in front of the camera…

Child sex abuse is a horrible fact within society, and hopefully something that we can prevent in the future throughout proper education, support, and a judicial reform.

If Henson’s purpose was to cast the spotlight on this issue, he has succeeded, and hopefully discussion will provide a standard of what is acceptable within our culture and society today…

On a side note, if Henson’s exhibition was held in a country with a lower age of consent, would the photographs be classified as Art, Porn, or Child Porn?

The lowest age of consent around the world is just 12yrs of age in Tonga, followed by 13yrs in Guyana and Spain; 14yrs in Albania, Austria, Canada, China, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Peru, Puerto Rico, Romania and Slovenia; 15yrs throughout Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Guinea, Monaco, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Thailand; 16yrs in Australia, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Hong Kong, Dominica, El Salvador, Finland, Guam, Israel, Jamaica, Kenya, Latvia, Namibia, Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, Tonga, Uzbekistan, United Kingdom; 17yrs in Cyprus and Ireland and 20yrs in Tunisia

Now who are you singling out though- Is it the dragon lady? or perhaps you've had a run in with Brandish?

A splendid post, from the most paranoid person i know! GO MORGAN!
