The culmination of a warmer than usual winter in the US, increased production and a drop in demand from other key markets has pushed oil prices to below $US52 a barrel.
Oil is at its cheapest since May 2005. Petrol prices have risen in recent weeks, and were averaging $1.17 yesterday.
But by the end of next week, the sharp fall in international oil prices should be translated into solid savings for motorists at the bowser.
But be warned - all it would take is a sharp fall in the temperature to push up demand in the US, leading to higher global oil prices.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that people today see up to 5000 ad messages a day, that's more than double what it was 30 years ago.
Advertisers today are trying to fill all blank spaces, such as supermarket eggs stamped with the name of a new CBS show and trays used in airport security lines have been hawking Rolodexes.
Advertisers are also becoming more inventive such as some "got milk?" billboards emitting the odour of chocolate chip cookies at San Francisco bus stops or an interactive ad for Adidas which looks like a static picture of a sneaker until someone walks past, triggering a motion sensor that sends a spray of miniature sneakers flying.
Consumer's don't mind clever advertising.

CNN reports that the Dallas based pizza chain Pizza Patron have sparked controversy after offering to accept Mexican pesos.
"This is the United States of America, not the United States of Mexico," one e-mail read. "Quit catering to the damn illegal Mexicans," demanded another.
Pizza Patron spokesman Andy Gamm said 60% of their customers are Hispanic and they are just trying to sell more pizza.
Many retail stores along the Mexican border in the US accept pesos, the move by Pizza Patron has sparked a reaction as it's stores are up to 700 miles away.
Pizza Patron proclaims on its Web site that "to serve the Hispanic community is our passion." Its restaurants are in mostly Hispanic neighborhoods, and each manager must be bilingual and live nearby, said Pizza Patron founder Antonio Swad, who is part-Italian, part-Lebanese.
So far 10% of transactions at stores have been in pesos.

The Australian reports that Qantas' non-executive directors have rejected a bid from a consortium led by Allco Equity partners, Allco Finance group, Macquarie bank, Onex and Texas Pacific Group to acquire 100% of the company.
The consortium offered $5.50 per share, and most analysts predicted that Qantas' board would accept this bid. However, Qantas said the terms were unacceptable and a statement from the company reads: "The proposed offer price is $5.50 per share and incorporates a number of complex conditions, the requirement for unanimous support by Qantas directors and a break fee."

Leon Gettler from The Age Blogs has noticed that for some people these days, a 70 hour week has become normal. On top of this workers are taking less and less vacation days.
However, these extreme hours are taking their toll, with most people working long hours saying if has a negative effect on their health, family, relationships and sex life.

Yes I don't think the consumer will notice the difference if the takeover went ahead.
I did see that the takeover will produce a $100 million stake for senior Qantas managers.
I read today that a Qantas sale could see the Federal Government relax its aviation policy, I wonder why that would be?
