Traffic Statistics

June 14th 2006 05:20
Every blog generates it's own set of traffic statistics which detail where all the readers are coming from and what they are reading.

Below are sections of a traffic report for OnlineGames.org.au (in bold) along with an explanation of each section.

TRAFFIC STATISTICS 20060907 GMT

www.onlinegames.org.au

Traffic reports are sent for each blog via email at midnight GMT every day and cover the preceeding 24 hours. They can also be seen online from the My.Orble.com Control Panel.

Hit Count: 959

The number of raw page views.

Individual Readers: 367

The number of individual readers as measured by the number of different IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Each computer on the internet is assigned a different IP address so it provides a reasonable measure of the number of different people who have read a blog.

Link Readers: 297

The number of readers who clicked on a link to arrive at the blog or who clicked on a link while they were there.

This is useful because web surfing computers like those used by google and yahoo to find webpages usually don't click on links. However some real readers don't either. For instance if a reader types in a web address, uses their favourites list, or clicks on a link in an email (like most subscribers do) they won't register as a click reader.

The true number of real people who are reading your blog is therefore somewhere between the number of Click Readers and the number of Individual readers and is usually closer to the latter.

When publishing traffic statistics most websites simply report the number of individual readers as described by the number of individual IP addresses recorded.

Note that the number of click readers is not the same thing as the number of people who have clicked on an advert on your blog. To see these statistics you will need to login to your AdSense account.

Repeat Readers: 102

The number of readers who have been to the blog before.

Recent Repeat Readers: 89

The number of readers who have been to the blog within the last 3 weeks.

The first line (robots, type-ins, bookmarks, reloads) shows hits which have no referring URL. These hits could be generated by robots (computers automatically surfing the web for search engines), people typing the URL into the browser address bar, people choosing a URL from a bookmark or favourites list, or people reloading a page.

Is there any way to lump all the google results together, or is that far too complicated?

hmm, some messing around with the text, all google.<something> could be added up to one. I know it is possible, just not sure if it's pheasible (thats 99% programming for me, if I don't think I can do it I don't realy bother).

I think this has already been done -- it's the domain referrals down the bottom of the blog stat emails.
