Stem cells to cure type 1 diabetes

April 16th 2009 18:17
Type 1 diabetes normally surfaces in young children and young adults as a result of an autoimmume process where the body's own antigens attack the pancreatic beta cells, which are responsible for insulin secretion. As a result there are a decreased number of insulin secreting cells, a decreased amount of circulating insulin and high blood glucose levels. In order to treat hyperglycaemia patients must either diet, use hypoglycaemic drugs and or inject insulin to lower the blood glucose levels too normal. This is not as simple as it sounds and in many cases patient's are unable to lower their blood glucose levels and they frequently suffer from hyperglycaemia. Long periods of hyperglycaemia is deadly to the body causing an increased risk in a number of diseases, such as heart disease, eye disease and kidney disease as well as damage to the nerves.

A stem cell transplant has been proposed as a matter of a permanent cure to type 1 diabetes. These stem cells will be able to produce insulin and mean there is no further need for insulin injections or glucose lowering drugs. Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of using the patient's own stem cells as a cure for type 1 diabetes and in a small study several patients were able to go for a few years without needing insulin. In many patients levels of C peptide were also raised. C peptide lets us know that the body is making insulin.

Longer term studies worldwide are needed to fully examine the potential for stem cell transplant as a way to reverse type 1 diabetes and leave Type 1 diabetics not needing insulin.

Smoking is an extremely unhealthy habit which sees you pollute your body with several hundred chemicals, some of them carcinogenic and toxic. Dangers of smoking are cancer, heart disease and general bad health. So how can you stop smoking for good??

1) Set a date to stop and stick to it

2) Remove all signs of smoking from your home, ie ashtrays, cigarettes, lighters and filters

3) Find a friend who is also quitting. You can help and support each other when the cravings get tough. If you dont have a friend who wants to quit, join a local group.

4) Make a list of all the reasons why you want to quit, ie cost, danger to health, bad smell, stained teeth and fingers, bad breath, and anytime you feel like starting again read this list.

5) Use nicotine replacement therapy, in the form of patches, tablets, inhaler or chewing gum.

Sttoping smoking is the best thing you will ever do for your health and your bank balance. prolong your life today and quit smoking cigarette for good.

Just today I came across my pregnant work colleague's cholesterol result, which was rather elevated despite her only being 25 years old. Normally when you have a high cholesterol your doctor will prescribe you statins. Statins work by decreasing cholesterol synthesis in the liver and increasing the clearance of LDL (the baddie) cholesterol from the body, thus lowering your blood cholesterol level. When you are pregnant statins are not an option as they will cross the placenta blood barrier to the foetus.

So how can high cholesterol be treated in pregnancy??

Basically the number one treatment is a combination of diet and exercise. These can be tough going when you are pregnant to say the least as numerous late night cravings will get in the way as will extreme tiredness.

But it is important you try to:-

Eat at least five pieces of fruit and vegetables per day
Do your best to cut out chocolate and savoury foods
Increase your fibre intake
Exercise via brisk walking 5 times daily for at least 20 minutes

It is highly unlikely that there will ever be a drug to treat pregnant women with high cholesterol as scientific studies would be too unethical. Another major problem is the fact that cholesterol is not measured in many pregnant women, my colleague was just fortunate enough to work in a lab and was able to get her's checked.

The best solution is if you have a history of high cholesterol in your household and are worried is to speak to your doctor about getting your level checked. The sooner you know the better. Please remember you will only be pregnant for 9 months and then you can commence a statin if your dietary and lifestyle changes are not effective.

Grapefruits can kill!!

April 4th 2009 00:54
We are told day in day out to eat at least 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables daily as part of a healthy lifestyle, but do you realise that in some cases fruit can put you in danger. One fruit which has recently been making the headlines is grapefruit. Grapefruits were once named the 'forbidden fruit' and it seems now for many on medication grapefruits can do more harm than good.

Grapefruits inhibit a protein enzyme involved in the metabolism of many drugs including statins such as simvastatin, atrovastatin, as well as calcium channel blockers, immunosuppressants, and anti seizure medications. As a result the concentration of these drugs in the body increases leading to more dangerous side effects which may be fatal

Is your body mass index too high?

March 31st 2009 22:09
Body mass index (BMI) basically provides a measure of your obesity and fatness, and allows health professionals to deduce whether your body weight is healthy for your height.

BMI is calculated by dividing the individual's body weight (in kg) by their height (in metres squared). After calculation you will get a number which represents whether you are underweight, normal, overweight, obese or grossly obese
