Top Ten Greatest Rock Front Men
July 20th 2007 03:46
Who is the greatest lead singer of all time? If your favorite is left out, tell me why he is so great. I realize that I just scratched the surface!
Jim Morrison: the eccentric lead singer for the Doors. Morrison is famous for his on-stage antics, made popular in the film "The Doors", starring Val Kilmer (mediocre film). He did everything from swear to expose his genitalia, all in the name of Rock N Roll. His voice is very unique, and his songs poetic. The Doors are one of those rare bands where the vocalist is the main character, as opposed to most bands where the guitar is the driving force.
Jim Hetfield: When it comes to defining Metallica, most people use James Hetfield as their guide. There's never any bullshit with James and there's never any shirking of duties. Example? When he threw his back out on the Summer Sanitarium 2000 tour, James ploughed his way through three weeks of intense physical therapy in four days, according to his physical therapist. It is precisely this sort of fierce, unbending dedication, devotion and spirit which has made James such an inspirational focal point through the years for millions of fans [courtesy of Metallica official website...couldn't say it any better]
Freddie Mercury: Queen's front man combined theatrics and an outrageously flamboyant stage persona with his fine natural-born talent (he possessed one of the greatest voices in all of music and penned some of pop's most enduring and instantly recognizable compositions.
Robert Plant: lead singer of Led Zeppelin was the poster boy for undeniable rock star presence. The women went wild whenever he would thrust his hips, and men dreamed of having his ability drive the women insane. His vocalizations were't too bad either!
Roger Daltrey: Think Roger Daltrey and what springs to mind? If you were to ask me, I'd say raw energy, powerful sensitivity as The Who's mic swinging front-man. Daltrey never pretends to be anything he isn't, and you get the idea that he toys with different genres just because he's genuinely enthusiastic about experimenting with music.

But from my list (and I don't have to think too hard about this one):
Robert Smith - The Cure (what a man, I just want to have a cuppa with him)
Ian McCulloch - Echo and the Bunnymen (have you seen those lips?)
Morrissey - The Smiths (I think he is likely to be a bit of an arrogant git but I would still sell a limb to meet him)
Nick Cave - he's a poet
David Gahan - Depeche Mode (such a sexy f***er)
Michael Stipe - REM (love his lyrics and passion)
John Lydon - Sex Pistols and PIL.....I think he speaks for himself
Jeff Buckley - poet on legs
Great question!!!

What a bundle of sexual energy that one....
Robert Smith - The Cure (what a man, I just want to have a cuppa with him)
One of my all time favorite bands. Got an email today that they are coming to Dallas in October. I will be out of town when they are here so I am trying to locate another show while traveling. (Saw them in the 80s.... wonderful. I am working on a post about the band.
Ian McCulloch - Echo and the Bunnymen (have you seen those lips?) Saw them up close and personal.... Oh yeah...enjoyed the concert too!
Morrissey - The Smiths (I think he is likely to be a bit of an arrogant git but I would still sell a limb to meet him)
Met him when he was just an irritating emo git not yet full on arrogant!
[I]David Gahan - Depeche Mode (such a sexy f***er)
Yep...love DM in all thier reincarnations.
Michael Stipe - REM (love his lyrics and passion)

Anyway, I don't get James Hetfield being anywhere on a top frontman list. First of all, the best frontmen typically don't play instruments that often. They sing. I'd replace Hetfield with Steve Perry and possibly include James LaBrie. Unfortunately, the music scene has drifted away from Rock singers like LaBrie and has focused more on Rap and Hip Hop. And that's a interesting side note to add. No Rap guy will ever be on any lead singer list of mine. Why? Duh.....

Sooooooooo glad to see you! I hope that your holiday was restful. Can't wait to hear about your trip.
To answer your question...yes I met him. He was very eccentric but not an ass like many folks report. :0)

How did you meet Morrissey?!!!! All details will be gratefully received. In other words, I'm envious.......I think he would be such an interesting person to talk to. Is he shy? I won't bombard you with questions, but feel free to tell me all the details you fancy...

In college I workd at the radio station and had the pleasure to meet many 80s singer/songwriters. The details are simple. I greeted him. He was polite. He asked for tea and I obliged. He wanted a "fag" and i laughed because I was not sure what he really wanted at the time. He was not dressed in what I considered "Morrissey" fashion. It looked like he rolled out of bed. He "chatted me up" and asked about local dining and pubs. It was around ten in the morning and he wanted a "drink". At that time no one served alcohol until lunch. He was very charming but irritated at the interviewers skill level. I reminded him that he was being interviewed by college students and to cut them a little slack b/c it was like interviewing Jesus. He replied that he had been up all "bloody night' and was tired and expected a more prepared interview. I laughed and he winked at me. He also moved around a lot..... like a caged lion. Any hoo. So long ago. I wish I remembered more but hope this helped.
so glad to see you back

I'be heard he is a big tea-drinker, that bit made me laugh. I would have a cup of anything with him. I would even have my tea without sugar.
I would love to know where he gets his lyrical inspirations from, I would have so much to ask him. But most of all, I would just want to gain a feeling of what he is as a person. It sounds like you did. What an opportunity, Mis.
Thank-you for the story, what a gem. What a man. What a poet.
I'll have to tell my friends, there's a group of us that are avid Smiths/Morrissey lovers and have been for 20 years (showing my age and dedication).
Thanks again, Mis.

Friend I am glad that you got back to me .... and I wish I remembered more. I am very fortunate to have been able to do this just wish I remembered more.
I agree about his skill.... He really had a presence and aura of importance around him but to me he was not arrogant at all.

OMG I almost forgot.... The Cure is coming to my neck of Texas next June and I already have tickets... YIPPEE!

I'm so pleased to hear that he didn't have an aura of arrogance. I guess that image of him could come from his upfront, descriptive lyrics that I love, absolutely love. Plus, he just seems to be against conforming, which I admire. I might have to listen to a song after this, I think it's 'There is a light that never goes out'.
Oh wow, The Cure!!!! I just saw them a couple of months ago and they were absolutely brilliant. Have you seen them before? I just looked back at my post I wrote just before I saw them and you were saying that you might miss them, that's great that it's happening. Gosh, tickets are already on sale for June? To me, that proves how brilliant they are
Thanks for sharing, Mis!!
