on Muslim Rationale

I think there are valid points here. As a leftist sympathizer, I hear a lot of rhetoric going the opposite way. People on the left are much more likely to talk about the ills of Christian fundamentalism and it's sordid history with outright contempt while talking about Muslim fundamentalism as blowback to US Middle East policy. The operative word here is fundamentalism. It's good to have beliefs, guiding principles, but it is not good to kill for them, no matter who it is or what they believe. I think this is the point most people can agree on. Unfortunately, it seems to get lost in rhetoric. SL, I respect you as a writer and commentator, but "taking good over evil" is far too slanted for my taste.

Hey SL,

Really good interview today. Look forward to next week. I'll call you and Manda next week and talk about your books. It's brewing.

I'm writing shownotes as we speak. Well, as I type and you read. Hmmm, I guess that depends on when you read this.

Anyhoo...

Thanks, SL, for talking with me about your views. I will post them soon. I'm sure I'll find many a liberal for you to feast on, and vice-versa.
That's what I hope to do with Zero Sum Cosmos: first to entertain, then to inform. The name comes from the pairing of opposites. If every positive number has a negative counterpart, then the sum of all numbers would be zero. Consensus or annihilation. I'm not sure which, but as long as it's funny, it'll be great.

on Harry's Forked Tongue

Now, within our open-source legislature, we have two opposing bills. The first, "Any woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy at any time, by any means." The second, "Any woman who terminates her pregnancy shall be put to death, along with anyone abetting her in her crime." These represent two extremes. Their language is different and can be confusing. The first could be interpreted to mean that a woman can kill her child even when they are full-grown. The second, although less ambiguous, could be interpreted to mean the man who impregnated the woman in the first place. But who would interpret these laws in such a way? This is a question for the judicial and executive branches of our government. In this techno-anarchy, it would be possible to propose a law that said, "Tommy the Silent shall be spanked with a trout if he ever comments on The Political Brief." How does the executive branch enforce this law? What if I never comment again and I get spanked anyway because the police need to fill their quota? If I challenge the constitutionality of this law, will the Supreme Court overturn the decision? This open-source legislature must also decide how much of their tax-dollars (can we still talk about tax if it's direct representation?) must be appropriated to my trout-spanking. I bet most Americans would bury this proposition. The other two would both get many votes, but I'll bet not as much as a law falling somewhere in the middle of the Abortion-As-Right/Abortion-As -Crime spectrum.
As for the efficiency of this process, I still think that our rapidly progressing technology could eventually cause us to seriously rethink the notion of representative government. For better or worse.

Awesome. You caught one of the problems with the first proposal: it had no mention of prosecution. This is necessary for any law to have any effect. How about this one: "Any woman who terminates her pregnancy shall be put to death, along with anyone abetting her in her crime."

So, let's have an experiment within these comments. A citizen within this techno-anarchy proposes the following legislation: "Any woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy at any time, by any means." There are several problems with this piece of legislation. How would you respond?

Politicians. Perhaps representative government is past it's usefulness. With our communications technology, you could use all of the tax money that our representatives use when they vote themselves another pay raise and develop an infrastructure where every citizen could effectively represent themselves directly. all you would need then is something like digg. rather than stories or videos submitted, anyone could submit a piece of legislation, and everyone with an account (ie registered voter) could digg it, or bury it. after so many votes, it would become a bill to go to the executive branch, if you even needed one at that point. what are your thoughts on that SL?

Sorry you didn't get to watch the video. The thing that pisses me off the most about it was the National ID Card apparently sheduled to hit us all in May of 08. He then goes into the possibility of electronic implants, to keep us all more "safe." Aaron Russo stated that he would not accept a National ID Card no matter what. I don't know. I find it increasingly difficult to decide who the terrorists really are.
