Tokenspark: Super Capsule Tokyo Blast!!! - by Philip Sharp

Tokenspark: Super Capsule Tokyo Blast!!! - May 2007

Augh! Minor hiatus. Good Widgets. Domain blog. JAPAN!

Hello. I have jetlag. And two jobs. And difficulty deciding on relevant post titles.

So, while I have a juicy list of entries planned to round out this blog, I'm afraid I'm going to need awhile longer yet before they find their way up here in all their prosaic glory.

You can count on a nice account of my very surreal last day in Japan for the next post. Also, since I've learned that Orble can, in fact, support widgets and embedded objects, I'll be adding a complete trip photo gallery quite soon care of Good Widgets.

In the meantime--and on a wholly related note, to be sure--why not check out the beginnings of my new Orble domain blog, Clearly Broke?

Here's an image that has nothing to do with this blog whatsoever.

Chiba!

Well, here I am using the computer of famed UCSD Summit alum Ramon Celosia. It's great to be hanging out in a Japanese house (though not really a Japanese home), and to not only be learning about English conversation teacher life, but, obviously, to be catching up with Ramon as well.

Being here in the suburbs is great -- not nearly as hectic as Tokyo itself. And, being that it's the suburbs, it would seem that local venture capital tries very hard to emulate the feel of American suburbian contentedness.

Malls have many perks. I grabbed some cheap CDs and Wonderswan games, finally. I also tried to win a Wii from a UFO Catcher. :/

Last night I met with Christian/Pam/Ellen from JTW. They helped Chris and I on an odyssey to find a lost coin locker. I hope to recount this in full detail later so as to give proper justice to some very, very helpful folk. I must say foremost, though, how thankful I am to still be in contact with JTW homies!

I've also just heard from Year of the Dolphin author George Plamantouras. I hope to meet with him tomorrow, perhaps!

Right now, we're playing Punch Out on the Wii. Hooray.

Some other tidbits:
1. I've been having many conversations about ... one very important topic. Biiru mo hitotsu choudai.
2. I've received a very generous donation from Andrew Cherene. Thanks!
3. Tomorrow I go to see a Famicom art exhibit!

Finally, a picture of okonomiyaki, one of my favorite foods.

Man, that okonomiyaki is yum... WTF?!

In 10 Tokyo minutes...

... a lot can happen, believe me.
I have 10 minutes to post to this blog -- but, unlike Tokyo, I do not operate at waapu supeedo.
I will also award myself the Ass Award for failing to think of much to say that is deep, academic, pedantic, metaphysical, thought-provoking, eloquent, or otherwise theoretically of any worth.

ass
Look! A store, in my honor!

I will attempt to resolve my loss of face with a sugar-coating of cuteness, much as they do when they do here in nihon.

capsule kid
Aww, Dopplar Cat loves capsules!

More highlights:
- Last night I met up with Liz from JTW; the surprise of the night was having been joined by JOE, a kendo-crazy Frenchman and fellow JTW alum -- who picked up the tab.
- Had Joe not picked up the tab, Chris and I wouldn't have been able to afford our capsule last night. Whew!
- My diet now consists only of Starbucks, seeing as I now need to charge all meals to a credit card. Hopefully I can get soem real Japanese food on the ol' plastic.
- Tonight we begin staying with Ramon, from Sierra Summit!
- But first! I meet up with Christian and others from JTW -- again! In fact, we have to get there in 1 hour. Uh oh!

Mata kondo ne.

The triforce.

I heard a tip that on a small island outside of Kamakura is a cave which holds the Triforce.
Unfortunately IT'S A SECRET TO EVERYBODY.
My legs are killing me.

Japan: Day 3.

Chris and I are now enjoying a 3-hour "all you can geek" pack at a mangakisa -- an internet/game/comic cafe with free drinks and cheap food. These things are nirvana

LAX

Well, Chris and I are here at LAX. We actually arrived fantastically early; and, since we checked in online and since we have no bags to check, we're stoked. In fact, we've already had a nice pint of Karl Strauss Red Trolley to help ease the pains of economy class.

BURASTO OFFU!

Well, here I am, sitting in my little box in Solana Beach. The bleach in my hair (and on one of my eyebrows...?) hurts a bit. Typical of my impulsive nature, I've decided to lighten up a few blotches on my head. I'll fit right in when we get to Harajuku.

Chris and I'll be going up to his folks' place in the OC tonight -- my little hair misadventure had better find resolve before Chris arrives... Anyway, We'll need to be at LAX around 10 tomorrow morning, so I guess that means we'll be getting up early. Dangit. Now, getting up early in Japan is something else altogether -- I won't want to miss a thing, and since we'll often be staying at capsule hotels, I'll wanna make sure I have time for some sauna action and whatnot before we have to check out

HANAFUDA OMG LOL SUGEI NAAAAA

The following video (link below) is the work of a superb chap named Daniel Watts. He was the only person to come see my senior project who wasn't a personal friend of mine. Now, he's a YouTube celebrity -- so I guess I can say that he can fight with Lucky Wander Boy author D.B. Weiss for the most prestigious person to've sat through all 45 minutes of my art madness

And now, a better picture.

This is maybe my favorite picture of myself -- ever. Yeah, it's a bit cliché and looks like something you'd find in the rear-cover jacket of a bargain bin book... but hey

Haha. Ass.

ASS!
I love Japanese stores.

This was taken two trips ago, in June 2004. I believe this is in the Tenjin Daimyo area of Fukuoka. ^^
