Timaru

Living in Timaru was an exciting time for us and we had our share of learning experiences. Here we lived at five different addresses and God provided us with a car. It was a Nissan Sentra and gave us 10 years of trouble free motoring.
After being, unemployed for a number of years McDonalds also became my employer. I gradually worked my way through the ranks becoming maintenance manager. Eventually I got free food and had the waistline to prove it.
The church we attended was humming and soon became great friends with the Pastor who went on to take the weddings of my two youngest children. My wife did some song leading and I looked after the men’s ministry. Promise Keepers had just begun and we all went together and enjoyed the presence of the Lord.
I still have a bit to do with PK’s these days but tend to keep out of the limelight. Three of Hine’s children moved into town, as did my two oldest boys. With my two youngest still at home, seven of our children were about. Sure, we had our difficulties but we worked things through.
Here I also completed my diploma for Freelance Journalism and Children’s Writing. I remember writing this fantastic story but no publisher wanted anything to do with it. After the tenth rejection I wrote a rather to the point letter asking what was wrong with it and telling them I could write anything and what were they looking for.
I was surprised at the reply I got. He asked for a New Zealand story. We wrote him six of which two were published as children’s picture books.
Four years in one place was a long time for us. Therefore, when the Lord wanted us to go to Wellington we jumped at the opportunity. By now our two youngest had left home and one of our grandsons had come to live with us so we took him with us. With much of my wife’s family living here, I got to know them very well. Then we got a burden for family that lived in Invercargill a town right at the bottom of the South Island.
