Inglorious Basterds

August 25th 2009 05:30
Dir: Quentin Tarantino (writer )
Genre: Quentin Tarantino
Running Time: 153 mins

Chapter One of Inglorious Basterds begins in France during the Nazi Occupation, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) survives the bloody execution of her family at the hand of the cruel and sadistic Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna re-appears later in occupied Paris, where she is now the owner and operator of a cinema.

Of the Basterds, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) leads a volunteer group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of violent retribution against any accessible Nazi target. Dubbed by their enemy as “The Basterds,” Raine’s squad teams up with a German actress and double agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a suicidal mission to take down the entire leadership of Nazi Germany.
'I want my scalps', so says Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt)

This creative piece of cinema fiction by Tarantino has a look and feel that is instantly recognizable. The film is brilliantly costumed and propped. The characters are both caricatures and composites, thereby telling a deep and painful truth, whilst honouring the reality of what happened in WWII. Tarantino is willing to kill any of his characters, and he does, in the pursuit of this greater truth.

This film is really five films in one, a quintet in fact, or five chapters or scenes. The scenes have a cohesion and structure that is typically Tarantino. Each perhaps a little long, and complete in themselves, but together make a whole greater than the sum of the parts. The blood lust is abundant, the violence only to be expected, but which serves the story well. Tarantino also appropriates film genres well, the subtitled European drama, now a successful Tarantino trademark. He also successfully appropriates the gritty WWII genre, with style and panache.

There were many attempts on Hitler’s life, two of which we know took place in Paris – though none were at a premiere for a film. One of Tarantino's doomed heroes is an expert on pre war German cinema. So the use of film history, the location for the assassination and use of film during the assassination is at the very least Tarantino’s message to us of the power of film – a case of celluloid being mightier than the machine gun perhaps?

This may be Tarantino’s best film to date. I loved this film for its wit, even the parody of the British High Command by Mike Myers, the attention to detail, and the fact that this film serves it up to the Nazi’s big time. I loved it. although I respect the fact that the big T. is not to everyone’s taste, this film is truly marvelous.

District 9

August 16th 2009 10:11
Dir:Neill Blomkamp (also screenplay with Terri Tatchell)
Genre: AntiHollywood, SF, Action Thriller
Running Time:112 minutes

This is without a doubt, one of the most inspired and clever films to hit the cinema screen in a long, long time. The premise is simple Aliens have arrived - above Johannesburg - they have been settled in District 9 - now a slum, there is a hero who does not fit the bill any sense of the word and an evil corporation hoping to profit from alien weaponry. Add into the mix an emerging sense of empathy from our unlikely hero and a touch of ET phone home and this film is a winner.
Report any violations to the authorities.

At no time in this film can you say you know where this cinematic wonder will take you. It is full of surprises and plot twists aplenty to keep you on the edge of your seat. The look of the film mostly grainy with a touch of hand held and CTV thrown in give the audience an immediacy and connection that a big budget glossy production could never achieve. The characters present a gritty realism which apes the era of apartheid and that perhaps is an underlying message - that so much of value was lost through murder, ignorance and prejudice in the pursuit of separate lives.
Sharlto Copley as Wikus Van De Merwe

The script is tight and moves rapidly. The weapons effects leave nothing to the imagination - there is abundant gore to satisfy lovers of cinema horror. there are also some truly nasty characters to deal with - all human of course. The baddies in this story are a combination of the MNU Corporation and the Nigerian thugs profiteering from the Alien love of cat food. The hero of the piece, Wikus van de Merwe is played convincingly by Sharlto Copley, not known as an actor, but you may have seen Blomkamp's original 6 minute short film upon which this masterpiece is based 'Alive in Joburg' (2005). Copley plays a sniper - catch it on you-tube.

The visual effects are gritty and believable - especially the alien spaceship - the details of which are truly stunning. This film hard to categorize it is more than an Science Fiction or Fantasy film and more than horror or action and adventure, it is also a journey film - so I've dubbed it SG - 'Sans Genre'. Don't miss this amazing film, and enjoy the ride.

GI JOE- The Rise of Cobra

August 11th 2009 12:46
Dir: Stephen Sommers
Genre: Action, Adventure,Science Fiction
Running Time: 118 mins

Channing Tatum aka 'Duke' leaving nothing to the imagination

This is a ‘Boys Own’ adventure flick of the best kind. Lots of whiz bang visual effects, heroes and villains slugging it out in exotic and fantastic locations, a plot line that requires an IQ in single figures to follow and weaponry and military outfits that leave nothing to the imagination.

This film is a great romp into a futuristic world protected by the GI JOEs. Their mortal enemy McCullen, with an appalling Scottish accent, played by Christopher Eccleston is superbly evil – clearly modeled on every American Banker interviewed on TV over the past twelve months, even down to the suit. Yes, he’s thoroughly evil – to the very core. For the eagle eyed too there’s some fun with cameos played by Brendan Fraser and Kevin J O’Connor.
Sienna Miller as 'Ana' . This really is a kids film , honest.

Sienna Miller plays the wonderfully evil Ana aka The Baroness, vamping it up any time she’s on screen. Any claims that this film is just for little kids is very much mistaken. Her dominatrix persona and penchant for easy violence makes her an ideal foil for her ex fiancé Duke. Any similarities to TV soaps here is purely coincidental.

This film is at its very core an animation with a wide range of quality voice talents. In other words this film will not, and was never intended to, pick up any Oscars. Get over expecting this to be something that it was never intended to be and enjoy it for what it is, great fun and high jinks while the heroes and villains wear cool action gear. However, it does hit the mark in many ways – it’s a great kids film, its pure escapism, it looks fabulous, everything blows up at least once, all the good guys, well most of them survive to fight another day. For the uninitiated, the film leaves us hanging for the next gripping installment of this soon to be megabucks franchise.

This film is definitely a winner from my perspective. This is a boys/guys film, and I had a great time watching it. Leave the girls at home or shopping while you escape for a while into a world of high tech gadgetry and ninja nonsense, in the not too distant future.
