I Samuel 9

OVERVIEW: Saul is anointed…Proclaimed King and confirmed King by his actions as a king.
Who and what was Saul?
Read I Sam. 9:21…What is the issue with being a Benjaminite?
Read Judges 19, 20, 21
Read I Sam. 9:1-6
What does this tell you about the nature of the people to the prophets? What was their relationship? Note that they knew of him, but he did not command the masses. Most people were out doing their thing!
Read 9:6—10:27
How does Saul respond?
How would you respond?
What was Saul’s problem with this appointment?
What happens when we say no and God says yes? Consider Jonah
Why do you think God chose him?
What made Saul a King? What confirmed him as a King? What does this tell you about the nature of faith & works?
What is the condition of the Israelites? 10:19FF
How does God respond? (God is faithful even when we are not.)
Discuss how God acts in regards to his people. Explore how God works through prophets and others. Note that not everyone knew all that was going on.
How is God still the same God today?
In what ways does God function the same today? In what ways do we?
Have you ever had a time when you prayed for something like greater faith or patience, and then when things happened to strengthened that faith or sustain patience you didn’t want it anymore?
How does David become king from Saul? Daughter given…anointed etc.
Discuss how God used circumstances to direct his will.

Sam 7:5-6
Sam 7:7-9 What does God allow to happen from the Philistines? Why?
What did the Philistines attack do for the people of Israel?
What would have happened if that did not happen?
What does God do when the Philistines attack? Sam 7: 10-11
Joshua 1: 3,5,9
Discuss how God acted and how the people acted. How are we like that today? What must we do? What may happen?
Sam 7:12-17
Why did Samuel place a stone? What affect does this have?
How can we do the same thing today? Why? How?

A great discussion insued about how to really live for God. It is NOT about obeying all the laws or wearing crosses etc. It is about God being in your mind and on your lips in all things. Like a Christian teacher teaches using Godly term, we live the same way. NOt phony or pushed, but naturally. We do what we do for God. At teh same time undersatnd that sin is there too. We don't alwasy think of God and that's what Sunday is for. We get to lay it all down and he picks us up again.

Something to think about? What does the Christian life look like? If it doesn't lift you up, but rather weighs you down, then you have the wrong definition. Life with Jesus rocks!

Women's Thursday Study

What is the attitude of the Philistines towards the Ark?
Why were they afraid?
Read: 1 Samuel 6:1-7:1
Why didn’t the Philistines believe in the Israelites God?

NOTE: Remember that the Israelites God was not for everyone according to the Israelites. They were protective of their God and theology. They had built a system where they were the only beneficiaries of God power. Jesus is a foreign notion to religion. Therefore they knew Yahweh was better than their God, but they had to be satisfied with their own God.
What would the people of Israel had to do to share God with the Philistines?

How would they have done this?

How do we share Christ with other cultures and people?

How are we like the Israelites and in what ways are we like the Philistines?

Note: How many times have we said God doesn’t love me or God could never forgive me? That is very much like the Philistines!
Amazing dialogue this morning in study:

1.We took the first 7 chapters and explored all the ways in which God made his will a reality and what things need to take place. He showed how if you’re in a church and you lead it in a ay that is wrong, God will move us. He moves us in a variety of ways!

2. Consider all the ways we try to manipulate God like the Israelites did with the ark.

3. Consider how God prepares things for us when we don’t’ know it. Samuel had to wait for Eli to die etc. God may have a job or spouse or house, but negative things may happen to get you to the right place at the right time. Life is in God’s hand…

4. Consider how we entrench like Israel did, and don’t let other people into “our religions.”

5. Consider all the ways in which this study is applicable to today.

6. A great conversation…even ran over 25 Min. Wow…Thank you Jesus! change his mind. God’s will be done like it or not…

Samuel 2 Study Questions
Discoveries in Samuel 1: It was amazing the love that Elkanah had for Hannah. We talked about the life application of this text and several women shared thoughts and feelings, as well as, those who lived this. We noted that God gave Hannah and our members a husband that was special to handle this issue. It was an amazing study.
