Why don’t we pay attention when our parents are trying to tell something yet when it comes from a friend… funny, but we often agree?

At a glance
It all started with a smile and then a cozy chat made a connection and compatibility between people – Happiness that won’t fades away the smile on their faces, knowing that there is someone new in their lives that may be worth having somehow. Friendship arises out of mere companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden). The typical expression of starting friendship would be something like, “Really? You too? That’s great!” Companionship is only the medium of Friendship. Many people when they speak of their ‘friends’ mean only their companions. They’re attention has been caught by a sudden surprise of having a person who has to be known at a moment. And that instance makes it unforgettable and gives it a bit wonderful, thinking that it could get better so they refer to it as a friend instantly. Not all companionship turns into friendship. Precisely, some of it may even get worse. There is a lack of firmly agreed and socially acknowledged criteria for what makes a person a friend. Obtaining a friend isn’t that hard thing to do. The traditional idea of friendship has three components: ‘Friends must enjoy each other’s company, they must be useful to one another, and they must share a common commitment to the good’. It can be as easy as having a chat to know somebody better. Still, other people find in hard to attain friendships. Why? People are humans and we all have our fears. Some have fears of laying their trust to somebody especially in the first sight. In this generation we’re onto – lies, betrayals and crimes (emotionally) are everywhere. Who wants them anyway? Another is the fear of rejection where one is afraid of criticisms that may be thrown upon him/her. And it is a hindrance of thinking negatives when meeting a person. One cannot make chances into opportunities without even trying to. But no one can form a friendship until he/she realizes that the basis of being friends is meeting the needs of the other person. One must be a friend to have one. After a welcoming talk, one feels the pleasure and hope for another conversation next time. When this happens, friendship is starting to arise.

Through Ups and Downs
Friendships are relaxed, loyal relationships that involve understanding, communication, and consideration. Friendship is a relief. Friends relate. Nine out of ten young students, on their teenage stage, agreed that friends occupy a big part in their lives, that almost influencing them- for better, as well as for worse. In school matters, they also are involved. For instance, if they will do their homework, for sure everyone in the group will do it also. But when one of them got lazy, others won’t dare to try answering homework. People go out into the world and do their best. They have their ups and downs, their problems and triumphs, their fun and sufferings. Then they come “home” to a friend. They can relax, and then they are relieved. Friendship is a comfy situation like home. They get home, kick off their shoes, relax and sigh, “Ahh, home.” For man not only loves himself, but seeks another whose spirit he may so blend with his own as almost to make one being of two. This practice of having a friend makes the relationship more powerful. When a person has raging emotions, he can all burst it out in front of a friend. If that is so, tell me if that friend won’t be a part of him. That’s why a friend turns into a sister or brother. In some occasion, they may even be greater than your family. Does your mom ever know who your crushes were? Or does she ever know you fell crazy in love? Or does she even have an idea that you’re bored inside the house, adding up her quarrel with your father. No, she never knew anything while a friend knows everything, right? That’s why it isn’t impossible for a friend to influence a lot in one’s life. When you were still a child, you have thought that friends were your playmates. Then later on, you have appreciated that every views and identity is different from others. Until you have able to put yourself in other’s to look at interactions and thus to work on relationships. Theorists generally conceptualize “friendship” as a voluntary relationship between equals. This definition of friendship is an abstract conceptualization rather than a description of reality. Our character can easily be affected by our friends whom we are with the entire day; who talks with us every minute; who laughs with us even in bad times. If one is dreaming high, and his friends’ goal are barely simple, he might be dreaming the same the next day. If he is too silent and his friends know how to bang bombs, he might be learning how to fire rockets too. This may be neither a bad influence nor a sign of their friendship, rather it is the fact that you can act anything in front of them knowing it would may be a tease, yet acceptance is always present. Whatever you’re movements are, they won’t dare question those as long as you don’t hurt anyone and they are all happy, unlike with the parents that every little thing is noticed. Funny, but that’s a reason beyond choosing to leave the house instead of staying inside. Friends will welcome each other’s company and exhibit loyalty towards each other. And loyalty is like endangered specie in a forest. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviors. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them. . Friendship… is a kind of virtue, or implies virtue, and it is also most necessary for living. Nobody would choose to live without friends even if he had all the other good things…. There are, however, not a few opposing views about friendship. Some hold that it is a matter of similarity: that our friends are those who are like us… Others take the contrary view…. For instance, policemen can be-friend a criminal. Their friendship won’t be affected by the character of the other and it also means that not because the criminal does crimes, the policeman will do the same. Although logically: the policeman as a friend should give his friend a counsel. Think about this: is anyone willing to sacrifice a virtue for the sake of a friend? One is obligated to help a friend, but only within the limits of law and morality. Although some are contrary for they value a friendship too much. Never can one man accept another, or the two become friends, until each has proved to the other that he is worthy of love, and so won his trust. A person can have many friends as many as he wanted to. But in having friend more than one, there should equality and no ranking of friends. Be reminded that all of them are there for you and all of them are your buddy. They stay beside you no matter what. Those who are quick to make friendly advances to each other have the desire to be friends, but they are not unless they are worthy of love and know it. The wish for friendship develops rapidly, but friendship does not.

From Great Minds
Aristotle provides us with one of the great discussions of friendship. He distinguishes between what he believes to be genuine friendships and two other forms: one based on mutual usefulness, the other on pleasure. These two forms only last for as long as there is value and pleasure involved, whereas genuine friendship does not dissolve. It takes place between good men – they are good in one another and in themselves. Aristotle continues, ‘and it is those who desire the good of their friends for the friends’ sake that are most truly friends, because each loves the other for what he is, and not for any incidental quality’. Friendship can only exist between good men. For if they are evil, there is no trust for there is no one to be trusted. No love, no respect, no temperance, nothing… There are three kinds of friendship: the one that focuses in the function. It is a permanent thing therefore it doesn’t even last. In fact, in some of friendship, this is what makes the closeness alive; the one that is based on pleasure where they spend the day and live together because that is how they realize the object of their friendship. Friendship between the young is ought to be grounded on pleasure, because their lives are regulated by their feelings, and their interest is in their own pleasure and the opportunity of the moment so that they are quick to make and to break friendships; because their affection changes just as the things that please them and this sort of pleasure changes rapidly; and the one that is goodness-based where states that only the friendship of those who are good, and similar in their goodness, is perfect. It is those who desire the good of their friends for the friends’ sake that are most truly friends, because each loves the other for what he is, and not for a certain quality. Accordingly the friendship of such men lasts so long as they remain good; and goodness is an enduring quality. Also each party is good both absolutely and for his friend, since the good are both good absolutely and useful to each other. . Friendship of this kind is permanent, reasonably enough; because in it are united all the attributes that friends ought to possess. But in this friendship all the qualities that we have mentioned belong to the friends themselves; because in it there is similarity, etc.; and what is absolutely good is also absolutely pleasant; and these are the most lovable qualities. Therefore it is between good men that both love and friendship are mostly found and in the highest form. Nothing in the world is so hard to find as a thing entirely and completely perfect of its kind.
