There's Something About Mary (Magdalene)?
January 20th 2007 22:17
Warning: The following post contains progressive ideas of a non-traditional kind, which may offend those whose beliefs rely on strong Christian fundamentalism. Please do not read ahead if you feel this is you and you do not wish to be sullied by being exposed to material which your faith may consider blasphemous.
For those of you left high and dry after Holy Blood, Holy Grail (and then the fictional masterpiece, The Da Vinci Code), The Secret Teachings Of Mary Magdalene is the logical, ‘next step.’ However, like Holy Blood, Holy Grail, this is not a work of fiction, but drawn from the real thing, Mary Magdalene’s own handwritten Gospel.
Yes it exists. Her beautiful and enigmatic gospel is part of a collection of texts, three in all, referred to by scholars as Papyrus Berlinensis 8502. They were bought by a German academic Dr Carl Reinhardt in Cairo in 1896, 18 years before the outbreak of the Great War. It is widely understood that Dr Reinhardt found them on sale in an antique shop containing many Egyptian relics. Not surprising since Mary Magdalane was a highly educated and wealthy, Egyptian woman of true royal birth.
Since the suppression of all other gospel texts besides the canonical four, by decree of the emperor Constantine in the fourth century, nothing had been known of The Gospel Of Mary Magdalene until Dr Reinhardt’s discovery. There was a rumour, especially in France, where Mary was revered, but nothing concrete.
Known today as The Berlin Codex, Mary’s Gospel is being called “the Book of Love,” as it contains the complimentary esoteric teachings of Christ’s words and as such, many believe that humanity was not ready until now, to hear them. Indeed, hearing Mary 'speak,' reveals that Tradition is not fixed and newly discovered texts like the Gospel of Mary, allow us to hear other voices in an ancient Christian debate.
The three texts included in the Berlin Codex are of direct and complete relevance to the New Age which Christ prophesised. They are:
The Apocryphon of John, The Sophia of Jesus Christ, and The Gospel of Mary.
The Gospel of Mary is tiny, running only to just over eight pages. Ten pages have been lost, so less than half of the original text is extant. Nevertheless, it contains a unique poetry and grace, a mystical beauty, and a timeless – indeed, strangely modern – tone.
Outside of this remarkably researched and written book, fragments of Mary’s words can be found online Here. Some bits and pieces of Chapters 4, 5, 8 and 9 can be found online Here.
The Famous Nag Hummadi Gnostic Gospels , were recovered in 1945 (again, shortly after the cease of hostilities) and perfectly compliment the Berlin Codex, putting the message of Jesus and Mary’s hugely significant part in the story and contribution to the teachings, into their proper, holistically balanced, perspective.
The jars containing the Dead Sea Scrolls contained a library of Gnostic material of immeasurable value - 13 volumes survive, comprising 51 different works on 1153 pages. 6 were copies of works that were already known; 6 others were duplicated within the library, and 41 were new, previously unknown works. Included were The Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Truth, Treatise on the Resurrection, Gospel of Philip, Wisdom of Jesus Christ, Revelation of James, Letter of Peter to Philip, On the Origin of the World and other writings. Of these, the Gospel of Thomas is considered the most important. It was a collection of the sayings of Jesus which were recorded very early in the Christian era. A later Gnostic author edited the Gospel. Some liberal theologians rank it equal in importance to the four Gospels of the Christian Scriptures.
The confrontation of Mary with Peter, a scenario also found in The Gospel of Thomas, Pistis Sophia, and The Gospel of the Egyptians, reflects some of the tensions in second-century Christianity. Peter and Andrew represent orthodox positions that deny the validity of esoteric revelation and reject the authority of women to teach.
The Gospel of Mary attacks both of these positions head-on through its portrayal of Mary Magdalene. She is the Saviour’s beloved, possessed of knowledge and teaching superior to that of the public apostolic tradition. Her superiority is based on vision and private revelation and is demonstrated in her capacity to strengthen the wavering disciples and turn them toward the Good.
Indeed, the Gospel of Mary communicates a vision that the world is passing away, not toward a new creation or a new world order, but toward the dissolution of an illusory chaos of suffering, death, and illegitimate domination. The Savior has come, so that each soul might discover its own true spiritual nature, its "root" in the Good, and return to the place of eternal rest beyond the constraints of time, matter, and false morality.
My point is this;
Emperor Constantine and after him King James, each re-wrote the Bible to suit themselves, for the times in which they lived. Today, we have the Gospels of the people closest to Jesus (who weren’t working for the Romans, or the King); those of Mary herself, Jesus’ brother James, Philip and all those mentioned above, as well as many others pertaining to esoteric world knowledge of our true place on the planet.
Is it time the Bible was updated with the newfound Gospels being made available, perhaps as annexes, to offset the technological chasm that is creating anarchy on this planet, through repeated generations of alienated masses ... or do you think the truth is best kept hidden from the masses, each finding his own truth by themselves ... if so, why?

You are right of course and you could say that in this case, I learnt from a master and thank you.
I am so glad you chose to stop before defiling yourself ((truly)), it explains, why neither of you have answered the question?
hmmm, perhaps, sometimes it can just depend on how you slept on it too?
Spain01, Sorry I had to delete your comment as it was mucking up my page... please restate your argument without the long weblink address, if you wish. Apologies again.

I just think we need updates on the writings on life and modern day living, not so much of the scriptures, maybe that's a lazy point of view, and I am not Catholic.
Not being able to read properly was disappointing, especially for you.
I'm not sure that I've answered your question, but good on you for asserting yourself to the male response.
I am of the opinion, generally, that talk is cheap, and actions speak louder than words, I also have great difficulty with someone's referring to the Catholic scriptures yet defiling the teachings of the Church.
Let's hope there are some more comments coming.

Good post and on things I've considered myself.
But first, I want to say that your post looks fine in Mozilla. Maybe it only runs off the page in some versions of IE. And one nitpick, which has no bearing on your argument, the Nag Hammadi texts and the Dead Sea scrolls are different bodies of writing. There is some overlap in the text, but different communities created them.
I don't think the Bible should be updated. I think it's fine as it is. Constantine doesn't seem to have changed the Bible as it was translated from Hebrew, so I'm not sure why we should suspect him of adulterating the rest.
I also don't think the other gospels should be suppressed. They are available to anyone who is interested in reading them.
Whatever book or oral teachings a person has, they still have to find their own way. Following blindly is a choice some make.

The draft is suitably set on the page, it is in between this
and the "final"
that things have gone wrong.
Did you do anything different? I suspect not, but if
you did, undo it
and start again in the usual way.
Other than waiting for Orble, you could try resetting
the whole thing
to the left, end all sentences early leaving large
space at side which
will get gobbled up by the computer, leaving your
texts, pictures readable.
You'd need to do the same thing with the comments,
if you can.
Best option, be patient sister, be patient, as you're
going away that
is not easy, but think to yourself, "in 12 monthes
time how much
will all of this worry me??? Probably not at all.
Peace, my little butterfly, peace, rely on Aquarius,

No offence taken, I am no expert.
My point is that there are more
Texts available now, than in
Constantine’s day, but it is
Written from a Jewish/Roman
Standpoint… and,
As such … Biased?
Couldn’t the found texts
And Gospels, be annexed?
Reprinted Bibles from 2010,
All with Annexure A-Z
Of that material, discovered,
And relevant about 100%.
Who would oversee it?
That may be the problem,
As so many denominations…
Too many…
Maybe just print them as
They are … why not?
Yes, let the people find
Their own way, as was/is
Intended.
Whilst it is true that only after following
Certain paths, the truth sets you free,
It is also true that you need the
Truth to start with too… and
usually it has two sides, no?
Yes, my point completely,
Not suppressed in any shape
Or form, by any denomination,
no bias, just as they are - not to
Detract from Jesus, but to
Detract from his detractors.
Mary’s words certainly do that!
Lilla.
Only can read half still,
so frustrating....!!!!!sorry.

The book of James is already included in the bible right? It is in the New International Version, anyway, I have it with me now, and yeah, they say it's written by Jesus' brother. But then on another version, they say it's written by Jesus' disciple James... I'm confused. What I'm interested in knowing is whether Jesus truly had brothers and sisters, because in Matthew it makes reference to his brothers and sisters waiting for him, but somehow they are never mentioned at all, whether in other gospels, during church, nadda.
Josh McDowell's The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict can give a Christian response to your question. It explains the authenticity of bible texts, as well as the reason for their inclusion. It answers a lot of questions that are raised, and is very interesting.
I, personally, can't give you an answer to your question, because I simply don't know enough to confidently agree or disagree.

The question is
why don't any of these

Could it be that popular

Usually a serious
accademic will go step by step
over every claim and test them
against objective evidence.
Many startling claims have
fallen to pieces in the face
of honest examination
What may seem like a
great new wave can
also end up as discredited
rubbish. If the person wrote
the book: cherry picked evidence;
rejected other evidence that
countered their claims; made
broad generalizations and
suppositions the book will
fall appart in accademic circles.
Conspiracy theories can go two
ways: the accused could be
hiding the truth or the accusors
could be trying to perpetuate
a lie and call it truth.

You raise interesting questions. As far as I have discovered, Jesus was illegitimate by all accounts and explanations of the day, but Joseph accepted it and Mary, as she was shunned by society. Immaculate conception must have been pretty hard to explain to Jewish people? [Interestingly enough, her sisters name was Mary also and there was another Mary in the village too]. There were two James’ and the Nag Hummadi is the testimony of Jesus’ brother James. The other in the Bible, is (I believe) the gospel of the disciple James.
In your confusion you have hit upon the central thrust of my problem with current versions of the Bible, in the way it confuses.
Translated from Hebrew, by Romans, to eventually suit the English Nobility; re-written for King James by non other than Sir Francis Bacon? [King James Version] …
Pick up any religious text from around the world and it COMFORTS the reader.
Our Bible? Usually, total bloody confusion … A mixutre of every religion and tradition throughout the known universe! Great, our instruction manual to life, the Bible, is totally confusing. Further more, it does not seem "complete" to me : but we must be, to follow it?
How can I follow half an instruction? How do you assemble a swing chair with only half the instructions? No wonder people are running around thinking they are worthless and evil incarnate!
However, there is good news if you follow the Holy Grail to Mary, because it does compliment Christs words and lead back to the redemption that Christ spoke of, but not blindly, consciously. She speaks of the inner workings of Jesus’ words with utter simplicity that you’d have to be a fool to miss the point. No hidden sub-text anything! Pure and simple, "the moment" – just like that. “in the blink of an eye,” it compliments everything I had read in the New Testament and does not exclude anyone.
I found that Mary's simple words bought me great peace and understanding of what Jesus had meant – not intellectually - knowingly. It seems that Jesus offered the knowledge, Mary the means. Whilst I read this book, I realised many things and found that many of the previously confusing thoughts I had held from reading the scriptures, suddenly became super clear.
The Yin and Yang of it all, the utter simplicity.
I am no expert either Always, but really appreciate your search for answers and for anyone who is open minded enough to read Josh McDowell’s answer, I suggest you blaze a few trails and try to read some of the Nag Hummadi as well. See if you don’t find the words putting things into perspective for you in some way?
Ask yourself does any of it offer you peace and solace, or put the confusion to rest? Or did I miss the point of Christ's mission ... wern't we supposed to find peace through truth?
The beauty of this is, that if you find it all to be rubbish, then that will be your truth!
Happy reading..

You raise interesting points and there have been many who would pervert the truth to suit their own nefarious purposes, but I am not talking about those.
I am talking about surviving documents that were hidden by persecuted pacifist communities, who felt it was their duty to preserve the truth in time capsules.
Your comment suggests that you view the Messene’s, Essene and Gnostic mystery schools as cults. That said, they were directly lead down from Egypt and carried ancient knowledge with them from peaceful civilised worlds, not conquerors and vanquishers…
As I understand it their lineage went down into the Freemasons and Templar orders? They taught women and men alike and did not discriminate the genders for matters of universal truth.
Mary Magdalene is not a startling claim, she is a mute who must speak and a logical progression, as the dark ages recede and people come out into the light. Perhaps, the workings of the current Bible have been tested, generation after generation and come up wanting? A matter of timing?
But I digress… because intrinsically, your argument is the same as mine…
Who would regulate and update any inclusion of annexure’s into the existing collection of sacred texts that we call the Bible?
What gets put in and what gets left out?
Who should decide; Priests, Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans, 7th Day Adventists, Academics, Scientists, Historians, Archaeologists, Politicians, Judges, Pagans, Atheists, the U.N.???
Who was the first to decide?
No conspiracy theories here Damo, just a book review and recommendation that people open their minds, read the words and decide for themselves, that’s all we have left to go on really.
Freedom.
Democracy.
“The truth shall set you free” and that to me, means peace of heart and mind.
That's worth the search.
Cheers,
Lilla

I found it invigorating to live amongst this paradigm, although it too is not without restriction to some degree and not always 'ideal.' Perversion of justice, it seems, abounds in every system and may be what Christ aimed at getting at - eventually. A detatched bigger picture?
But rightly so, not without the Yin and Yang being balanced first, as you say.
I concurr with your accord my dear.

I agree, I think the most neutral would be the academics and they would be the ones least likely to have hidden agenda's.
Yes, let the academics add the recovered texts, once they have been proven to be as authentic as those already a part of this great collection of timeless works, about an enigma.

If the bible has been rewritten in every age to suit every age, are we not simply doing it again? These days we cannot( WILL NOT) accept that women cant teach, so, as you said, the world was not ready for it until now, but I feel, perhaps, the true word has been lost...For god really is both male and female, and neither....

since it's all muddled anyway ... this is exactly why I feel that the feminine half needs to be added as annexures. We have the male half of what is, was and should be, but most of the modern denominational Christian religions teach only the male half. Very few female voices.
Women are acknowledged as 'being around' but their views, words and 'earth wisdom' is not revealed. In fact, I see evidence of it being suppressed in many places... but always find myself asking if that isn't natural in some way too?
Balance brings peace because it is, exactly as DuskyD says, one needing the other to give meaning and value to the other. When all is in balance, then we can start to build the better world that Christ spoke off. The world in Revelation. The one where the devil is bound and gagged and sent off to boot camp for 1,000 years... you know, that one.
The New Age.
Academically and historically; scientifically and mathematically - in fact in every field of human endeavour, we progress through generations by adding to the knowledge of previous generations - through the documentation - using the written word.
Why should the Bible - our own mystical collection of written spiritual history - be any different? When omitted, missing pieces are found that fit certain pices of the puzzle shouldn't we all applaud that they are found and can offer new insights into the seemingly meaningless randomness of our existance in the universe?
Then again, I can see where you are coming from too ... They are ancient texts and should not be altered ..and I agree. They should never have been altered from the first translations from Hebrew... from the original Hebrew word given to Moses, ANoKhY, the original "I am" .. as Hebrew is the sacred language considered the holy tongue.
But alas, that never happened, as it went from Latin to Greek to German to English, so on and so forth ... each nationality adding it's own "colour" and ":Flavour..."
Thanks for your thought provoking comment,

The point here, is that you mention 'people' running around thinking they are evil incarnate....I thought I was the only one! No matter how well I remember my previous lives or know the truth of balance, some part of me still hangs on to that brainwashing - and it says if I cast, meditate, feel desire, Im a sinner, and if I enjoy it....Im devil spawn!
It puts a serious twist in the mind. It makes you think even if these are bullocks ideas, Im bent out of shape anyway!
I was going to do lots of bible posts but just couldnt stomach it any more. And I dont like debating it - I always come of anti christian when Im not really, people find God and peace, thats great. Its just if they want to force their idea of god down my throat....Then we got a problem.

All Hail Emperor Bush!!!
Note: The longer that ANY religion exists, the longer stupidity will have a chance to triumph over reason and common sense...anyone who thinks otherwise need only look at the volumes of history.
ALL RELIGIONS ARE BAD!!! ONLY when people get that through their thick and entertainment-addled brains will anything ever change on this planet...and I'm getting to be of the opinion that it's already too late...

*LOL* Great response and (before I am accused of 'generalising)... I was grooving along with your reply there, agreeing with you all the way... until you used that word... 'BAD.'
*cue the sound of screeching car breaks*
Something in the word used here, suggested to me that there is absolutely no good in religion anywhere ..and I have to disagree, because I have lived within three separate religious paradigms (east and west) and studied and read many others. The facts as they appear to me, is that all religions originally contained some truth of spiritual reason at the core, in order to create HOPE. Especially in polytheistic religions like Hinduism, where the feminine is as recognised and worshipped as the masculine, which results in a balance of a nation that does not chomp at the bit to become a colonising, murdering one.
Hope, it seems, is essential to the very poor (or spiritually impoverished) of the world and important in helping us to continue to become a better person ... and perhaps why religion was first contrived, to offer comfort against the harshness of nature?
However, it is here that I diverge again, and am back with you in agreement, in that many religions (like Christianity and Confucianism) have been taken over and used by a select corrupt few, and as such the message of hope is twisted until it is lost and all have fallen into existensialism - even easier to control people in this daze.
But this raises the question, that if some of the missing pieces like the Gospels of Mary and Jesus’ brother James (Nag Hummadi), were to be re-included, would the impetus still be there to continue to feel that it is '....perfectly fine to murder in the name of your invisible omnipotent being that you can't prove exists any more than you can prove that George W. Bush has a single firing neuron in his soft little head.' (as you so eloquently put it ...still giggling at that brilliance btw.
[Looking back], it seemed to me when I first penned this, that I was aiming at the point of asking that, just as women tend to civilise and enrich a mans life, then perhaps re-including and accepting the importance of the feminine back into our rather patriarchal Bible, may be enough to put back the 'civil' in 'civilisation?'
I was musing ... and .. hoping... against hope and probably beyond reason in light of the times and where the one-sided worship of the masculine has led us ...and like you, feel that the freight train has left the rails already... but that is within itself, the end result of no hope, isn't it?
Thanks for stopping in with your rather excellent comment.
