The Fun Fair
October 11th 2006 04:00
It was never my intention to even go into the recent established temporary open-air fun fair when I heard that it was around the corner for more than a month. Yet there I was, standing in front of the entrance, half excited and half nervous when I saw the rides that I have never sat before. Seeing the rest of the group were in high spirits, especially Cody and Pam, I stepped up to the counter and bought 6 tickets for every one of us, as I needed to get some spare changes.
Then came the sound of heartbeat in me, staring at the little car racing track and remembered the once a week trip to the mini fair park with my parents, urging them to let me go for one more ride even I have sat on the bumper car a few times that day. That was truly heaven for me, being little and not worrying the days ahead and just being merry all the time.
While staring aimlessly at the mini track, a hand padded on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Caffee calling me to move on towards the token counter. Cody happily came skipping and asking us to take 20 bucks each for the rides.
“What ride?” I asked bluntly, and then following the direction of his finger, there stood “The Challenger”.
“Oh, that looks pretty scary…” Lina gasped. But Cody ignored her protest saying, “I don’t care, we are all getting onto that ride.”
“Oh come on, let’s pay up the 20 bucks first and then we decide later.” Caffee smiled at me.
So, I bluntly digged into my pockets for 20 dollars change and passed it to Cody, who gleefully skipped and went to get some tokens for everyone.
“Are you sure we are going for this?” I asked, frowning a little.
“Oh, I think I don’t feel like going up on that one.” Kassim said quietly.
Everyone else stopped and looked at him. “Why?” Pam asked with a shocked face.
“My stomach doesn’t feel right. You guys better go ahead without me. I can watch over your bags here.”
Before I could protest and urge Kassim to come along with us on “The Challenger”, Cody returned happily and was distributing the tokens to us.
“Let’s go! It’s about to start soon!” Cody was flagging all of us.
Looking back at Kassim, who walked slowly towards “The Challenger” and staring at the huge contraption, I had a second thought of it. Then Caffee called up to me, “Hurry! They are about to start!”
And so, I stepped onto the entrance and gave the worker my tokens, feeling unsure whether this is a good move.
Looking around for a spot, and hoping to sit beside Caffee, who’s my close friend, I found that she was already seated at the far left with Lina and Pam in the middle, leaving me the far right seat. Cody was at the next 4-seater. “The Challenger” looked like a 4-pedal flower, with each pedal consisting of 4 seats.
Carefully I put my sling bag down and went up to the seat, Pam smiled at me and said, “It’s really nothing. Don’t worry and just enjoy the ride. This is going to be fun.”
Fun? Yeah, I guess… as I tried to tug in the harness on me while hearing Pam’s protesting, “Oh! It’s so greasy!”
While waiting for it to start, my mind started drifting to the past remembering the last time I was on a really fast ride like this was on a roller coaster when I was 19. Boy, time really flies after that.
“Ready?”
I shook my head when Pam asked me. Then I smiled and said, “I think I’m gonna kill Cody after the ride.”
Pam laughed and assured, “Oh it’s going to be all right. Shouldn’t be that bad.”
“Shouldn’t be that bad…” was the last sentence I remembered and before I knew it, we were all up there, hearts racing and screaming our lungs out. I could hear Pam’s screams and her legs hitting mine because of the swinging impact.
“Oh God! When is this going to end?” I screamed in my heart.
“Oh heart! Don’t stop!”
“Breath! Breath!”
“Jesus!!!”
That was all I could remember in my mind as I was racing for breath and screaming at the same time. There were a few times I felt total silence and darkness and those seconds I thought I fainted, or I floated in the air, but most of the time I was screaming, shutting my eyes tight when it swung down in high speed.
“When is this stopping? No, no, heart don’t stop! I don’t wanna die here!”
As I was screaming this in my head, I could suddenly feel that the momentum slowing down, so I peeped around to ensure that it was going to stop. With a jump of gladness I saw the ride was ending, and when it finally stopped I saw everyone went down slowly with tired faces. And with my hands shaking I released the safety gear lock and slid down from the chair to get my sling bag.
Staring right in front was Cody, smiling at me and I gave a slap on his shoulder, still shaking but smiling, “Don’t you ever drag us up here again.”
Cody shrugged and laughed, “But it was fun, right?”
I then went to get my slippers and went down the stairs, rounding up the rest of us with Kassim standing at the end of the stairs, laughing and welcoming us back, as if we just came down from a space shuttle landing mission.

Lesson to learn:
Never go for rides like these when your stomach was full. I almost had the vomiting sensation when I was on “The Challenger”
If you have a weak heart, don’t go for it.
Be sure to take out your glasses when you go for fast rides. I was lucky that my glasses were still intact with me.

It's rather simple and straight forward, but this is my very first try of writing a short story.
Hope everyone will like it. ^_^

Wow! Thanks for dropping by and thank you so much for your support and comments! ^_^
Yeah, the experience was so deep in me (straight to the bones) I had the inspiration and went straight on writing on my notebook before heading to bed, affraid that after waking up from slumber I won't be able to put a single word on a post talking about this exciting experience.
Go and check out the fun fair, if you have the guts, go for "The Challenger" and "Vortex" your heart will really be left dangling halfway up in the sky! hahaha....

Thank you so much for the encouragement. ^_^
I will do my best to find more inspirations for writing fun short stories like this.
However, I need to overcome my painful shoulder blades from holding too tight (affraid to fall off) during the exciting ride. hahaha...
My brother and I once wanted to create a website to search for new writers and post their work inside. And we even thought of compiling it together (with the writer's permission) and publish them.
Ofcourse, royalty fee would always be there for the writers who contributed.
Though this dream is not fulfilled at the moment, but I hope one day it will.

I love this story. I wish everyone would do that. Take a moment to slow their lives down long enough to see the beauty that lives in every experience. I wrote a short one like this once after driving through a bush fire. The whole experience only lasted a few moments, but the pages of text will last forever. It is special to the writer to, don't you think, it helps define everything, putting emotions, feelings, thoughts into place. Great work, keep it up, I'll be back to read more.
I've just written a new piece on my envirowarrier.com site, drop by when you have time, see what you think, I'd be interested in your feedback.
Lilla.

Thanks for dropping by!
Glad that you liked the story. ^_^
I too wish that sometimes I can remember the good moments that I rarely come across in my life. This was unique because I hardly go to fun fairs, so this was like a small breakthrough for me...

Poor thing, your are having some pain on your shoulder.
Thank god, my pair of shoulder still fine, just too tired for my body to move after so many rides with the adventurous gang.
I am glad that you enjoy through out the outing. At least, I felt much alive with this bunch of gangs. This is true me. hahahahahaha.
Cheers,
Caffee

I am glad that you liked my very first short story.
A lot have been asking me when's the next one coming out... I have to say won't be this soon if it is about exciting rides like these. hahahaha...
Yeah. When I went to Gold Coast. I couldn't go to Dream World, instead I headed to Surfers Paradise.
