The Yankees win?
November 5th 2009 17:37
So the Yankees beat the Phillies in the World Series. Now I could go on a rant about how the Yankees got lucky, and that the Phillies would have won if Shane Victorino wasn’t hurt, but that’s not the case. The Yankees won because they were the better team. There was one thing the Phillies couldn’t do if they wanted to win this series, and that was to get into a slugfest against arguably the best offensive lineup of all time. And that is exactly what they did. Only 2 games were under double digit run totals, and only one under 5 runs. NL teams can’t go up against AL teams in a slugfest or the AL is going to win all the time. You can compare that with the 2008 World Series where 1 of 5 games had double digit run totals, and the Phillies won that series. The Phillies were one of the best offensive teams in the league and it showed in the World Series. You don’t score 27 runs in 6 games on that Yankee pitching staff unless you are a very good offensive team.
There is only one problem for the Yankees in this World Series win. Hideki Matsui. This was a guy who all year look expendable because he just doesn’t have really have it anymore. He’s a liability in the field, and didn’t reach 30 homers, or 100 RBIs. Still with all this being said, the Yankees are obliged to pay him for what he did in the World Series. I mean he single-handedly carried the team in Game 6, and won the World Series MVP. You could argue that Matsui only reached 30 homers once in his career with the Yankees, which is a good argument, but the stadium changed. Matsui lives to hit the ball into the short porch.(I’m not saying this as an argument for why the Yanks won, like I said before they were the better team.) So you can’t say that some of those homeruns would be flyballs in other stadiums. All I’m trying to say here is the guy has lost his power. He has only not hit 100 RBIs in a season 3 times, and 2 of those times he was hurt for a majority of the year. The other was this year in a very hitter-friendly ballpark. Another problem with Matsui is that he is very injury prone. He hasn’t played a full season in 4 years. With all of this stated, and researched, the Yankees still HAVE to sign him. If they don’t, it will be another slap in the face issued by the “Evil Empire”(not my words.)
