2010 FIFA World Cup: Dempsey Could Earn Iconic Status in South Africa

June 9, 2010 by Sean M. Hartnett

Clint Dempsey is already a firm favorite amongst American soccer fans, but he can become a world-renowned icon this summer in South Africa.

For many years American soccer fans pinned their hopes on Landon Donovan to be that man. The humble and less outspoken Donovan never seemed to embrace the role, rather allowing his performances on the pitch do the talking.

Dempsey carries himself with the bravado and swagger that has caused Americans to rally behind him. He has become the man to inspire American hopes in the 2010 World Cup. Part of that image is due to his rapping alias "Deuce." Clint appeared alongside fellow Texan rappers in "Don't Tread," for a video done by Nike ahead of the 2006 World Cup.

If not for Dempsey's partnership with Nike, Adidas could have made a great commercial similar to those depicting how Lionel Messi and Steven Gerrard got their "superpowers." As a boy back in Texas, Dempsey grew up in a trailer park where he learned to play football with Mexican immigrant children. While his brother was being scouted, Clint was discovered while practicing his juggling. The rest, as you may know, is history.

The other half of his image is—of course—due to his footballing ability. Dempsey combines skillful dribbling with a tenacious attitude on the pitch. His all-out effort is easily relatable, as his number eight jerseys have been the most requested in soccer shops across the United States.

His popularity grows greater by the day.

Followers of the Premier League are already well-aware of Clint's prodigious talent. Dempsey began to make a name for himself "across the pond" in his debut season by coming off the bench and scoring the goal that saved Fulham from relegation against Liverpool. He further won the hearts of Fulham supporters by tallying two goals during a 2008-09 match against London rivals Chelsea including a last-minute equalizer.

His greatest moment for the "Cottagers" came in a thrilling comeback against Juventus in the Europa League knock-out stage. Dempsey scored a dazzling chip-shot that sent the "Old Lady of Italian football" packing. Fulham went on to reach the 2010 Europa League final but lost to Atlético Madrid in extra time.

Spanish fans were stunned as the Americans ended their 35-match unbeaten run in the 2009 Confederations Cup. Clint scored the second goal of the match in the 74th minute, putting the result out of reach for the reigning Euro 2008 champions. He opened the scoring in the tournament's final, but his country was dumped out by the mighty Brazil.

If Dempsey is able to continue his inspiring performances in South Africa, fans around the world will join his ever-growing legion of admirers. Clint Dempsey's reputation is quickly rising in world football, and he has become a symbol for the rise of America in the world's game.

Inter Supporters: Quit Mourning Mourinho and Embrace Rafael Benítez

June 8, 2010 by Sean M. Hartnett

Jose Mourinho famously led Inter Milan to Champions League glory and completed their unprecedented "treble year" in style. He became the first manager of an Italian to club to win the Scudetto, Copa Italia and the Champions League. The man many call "The Special One" couldn't have left Inter with a higher approval rating from their supporters.

Nearly 100,000 Nerazzurri fans gathered in Milan's Cathedral square to celebrate the club's triumphs in late May and sang begging Mourinho to stay. As much as they loved their manager it was obvious that nothing was going to keep him away from lure of taking over at Real Madrid.

Inter supporters may still be recovering from losing Mourinho but they should take comfort in their club appointing one Europe's top managers as his replacement. Rafael Benítez achieved fantastic success in his early years at both Liverpool and previously at Valencia.

His debut season as Liverpool manager yielded his greatest victory as he won the 2005 Champions League. Inter's rivals AC Milan were stunningly defeated despite leading 3-0 at halftime in a thrilling comeback.

Benítez was able to follow that up with success in the 2006 FA Cup Final as his Reds staged another improbable late rally. He narrowly missed out on lifting a second Champions League trophy the next season, this time losing to AC Milan. Rafa fell just 4 points short of delivering Liverpool's first English title since 1990 as Manchester United were again crowned champions in 2008-09.

His years at Valencia were equally impressive as his time at Liverpool. Even without the spending power of rivals Real Madrid or Barcelona Benítez enjoyed tremendous success at the Mestalla. Rafa was able to capture the La Liga title in his first season as "Los Che" boss in 2001-02. He also led Valencia to the UEFA Cup & La Liga double in 2003-04 before departing for Anfield.

Now at Inter, Benítez's style will suit Serie A more than it did in the Premier League. Criticized by some for being too cautious at Liverpool, his preaching of possession-based, physically demanding football should fit well in Italy. His record of knocking Italian clubs out of the Champions League proves this point.

During his famous 2004-05 Champions League run, Rafa defeated Juventus before eventually winning the competition over the more formidable AC Milan. He impressively dispatched Roberto Mancini's Inter sides that dominated Italian football in the 2007-08 knockout stage. Benítez's best example might have not come against a Serie A club but rather the much-favored Barcelona when his counter-attacking Reds shockingly knocked out the Catalan giants during previous year's knockout stage.

Benítez's record speaks for itself as it holds up to any manager's in Europe. He never had the opportunity to walk into a ready-built club with large transfer budgets like Mourinho at Chelsea. Rafa has always had to rebuild squads under tight financial constraints.

Without the ownership distractions he dealt with at Liverpool and a fresh transfer budget, Rafa could very well go on to equal the success Inter experienced under Mancini and Mourinho. Soon the Nerazzurri faithful could be signing his name as they once did "The Special One's."

2010 FIFA World Cup: Barry's Fitness Vital To England Hopes

June 7, 2010 by Sean M. Hartnett

If England are to go deep in South Africa, their hopes hinge on the fitness of key midfielder Gareth Barry. Fabio Capello has decided to sit out Barry for England's World Cup opener this Saturday against the United States. The England manager is exercising caution and is unwilling to risk his midfielder who has just recovered from an ankle injury.

Barry went off injured in the 54th minute during Manchester City's 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. City clearly missed his presence on the pitch as they narrowly missed out on Champions League football. Tottenham's Peter Crouch scored the lone goal of the match guaranteeing fourth place for Spurs.

A long-lingering problem under previous England managers was how to accommodate star midfielders Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Sven-Göran Eriksson played Gerrard deeper allowing Lampard to go forward but this took away from Gerrard's overall effectiveness. Steve McClaren had experimented with Gerrard in a number of positions but ultimately failed as England missed out on Euro 2008 qualification. English pundits started to question whether the two midfielders were capable of playing together.

Unlike his predecessors, Capello was able to figure out how to get the best out of the pair by shifting Gerrard to the left. Barry was given the holding midfielder role as both Lampard and Gerrard were both given freedom to go forward. Gareth's flexibility is an asset for England as he can play on the left-wing, in central midfield or at left-back. Barry could even play centre-back in a pinch as he had in his younger days at Aston Villa.

He is the complete midfielder and possesses a sweet left foot. Barry's ability to deliver long passes and perfect crosses makes him one of the top distributors in Europe. When played on the left-wing he's able to fall back and cover as Ashley Cole makes one of his trademark runs. In a central role, Gareth is able to support his defenders and dictate play this his long-passing ability.

Overall, Barry has impressed me most with his coolness as he never panics. He has the ability to make clean tackles and seems to have a calming influence on his teammates. England has a long history of being knocked out in major tournaments on penalties. Barry is an expert penalty taker as he could help end this trend and vanquish old demons.

Gareth Barry is a vital utility-man for Capello. He excels in a number of roles and does not shy away from responsibility. If he can stay fit he can give his country a strong chance at glory in South Africa.
