Occam's Razor - by Adam Williams

The Wraith

July 2nd 2010 00:46
Fifteen minutes later he was walking up to Cordelia’s house. He noticed the lights were still on inside. He looked around, being careful in case anyone was leaving their houses in the middle of the night. The street was dark and silent. He walked closer to the door and stopped. There was the faint trace of someone laughing nearby.
“You won’t be able to enter,” A voice said.
The voice was deep and raspy, thick with evil.
“I see her precautions made sure the vermin would stay out,” Occam said.
“That includes you Francois,” Kurong said.
“That may be true, but things have a way of changing, as you well know.”
“I take it Marie is dead,” Kurong said.
“Indeed she is.”
“Such a pity, I expected her to dispose of you. You have gained considerable strength since I last saw you, but you were always the strong type, which was why I decided to make you.”
“You had other plans for me. You do forget that even though we are monsters, we still have the freedom to do as we please. Perhaps if you made me under different circumstances I would not be standing against you. I must admit the illusions that you have are indeed tempting, but that is all that they are, illusions.”
Kurong hissed with displeasure at the words.
“Fool, standing against me is a death sentence. Nobody will be able to stop me once the girl is mine, not even your precious Mistress!”
“That remains to be seen, Kurong. I can tell you this though, these precautions she has set up are not for me, they’re for you. It’s funny how you think that everything can be taken by force. Sometimes the feather wins out over the fist.”
“All of these years and you’ve decided that stealth and diplomacy are stronger than strength and fear. I pity you Francois. Have you forgotten where you came from and what you are?”
“Make no mistake Kurong, I can be ruthless when I need to be. Marie would have told you that if she were here.”
Kurong’s face went red with rage.
“You will die Francois along with all of humanity! Once my master is awakened nothing will be able to stop the purge!”
“Who is your master Kurong?”
“Now is not the time for any more questions. I must get the girl tonight!”
Kurong flew into the air and towards Cordelia’s house. He flew to the front porch and slammed into the door. A shimmer of light rippled from each impact. He continued to pound on the door. Occam just stood there laughing. Kurong walked to the side of the house and tried a window. The light reverberated but the window did not break. Frustrated, he turned back on Occam.
“You did this! You helped her keep me out!”
Occam shook his head. “Why would I tell her how to keep me out as well?”
Kurong snarled and bared his teeth like an animal. He flew into the air, aiming for Occam. Occam withdrew his kama and waited for the angry wraith. He looked deep into Kurong’s eyes as he was approaching and saw something he didn’t expect, fear. Kurong brought his hand back in a strike and Occam pulled his own arm back. Occam swung the kama forward just as Kurong went straight up into the air. He staggered back, raising a hand to his face. Blood poured from four deep gashes down his face. Kurong’s claws managed to miss Occam’s eyes.
Occam looked up into the air and saw the wraith retreating. He heard a deep wail of pain as the figure grew more distant. Occam sniffed the air and walked to a nearby tree. Underneath the tree lay a bloody hand. Occam smiled as he picked up the hand. Dirt and grass clung to it. He looked down and saw that a ring was on one of the fingers. He pulled out the bloody handkerchief and wrapped the hand in it.
He began walking towards Cordelia’s house when the door opened. Cordelia stared at Occam with wide eyes. Her eyes fell to the bloody package in Occam’s hand and she gasped. She looked back up at Occam’s face. Blood was still trickling down his face. She went back inside and a minute later she returned with a black towel.
“Here, use this on your face, it will keep you from bleeding everywhere,” She said.
“Thank you. I’m sorry to ruin your lovely towel. By the way, what prompted you to come outside?”
“I heard a scream. It sounded like a banshee or something.”
“And you decided to investigate,” Occam asked.
“I knew that whatever it was fled. I could feel it leaving.”
Occam nodded. “That is very perceptive of you. Do you often FEEL when things are around you?”
“Sometimes I do. Usually I feel malignant things. If you’re wondering, I couldn’t feel you.”
“What do you think that means,” Occam asked.
Cordelia looked around into the night, her eyes scanning the neighborhood and the sky.
“Come inside and we will talk some more, I don’t want to do it with that thing somewhere.”
“Very smart of you to want to talk inside, but why do you think you will be safe with me inside?”
“You could have hurt me already, not just right now but when we first met.”
Occam thought about this then nodded again.
“Cordelia, I have no intentions of harming you. Quite the contrary, I am here to help and protect you.”
Cordelia did not answer, she went inside the house and returned five minutes later.
“I removed the protection I have on the house. I think that not only does it keep that thing out it keeps you out too. Please come inside, I have some things to ask you,” She said.
