The BIG DAY OUT - The Melbourne review

January 30th 2008 00:40
Well, another year of Big Day Out maddness comes to an end and while there were many good memories from the day, there were more negative aspects than this punter has experienced in the past.
Lets go through the good points first shall we?

The bands:
Great sets from Opertaor Please - early but got the crowd going.
Agie March - one the smaller stage but had the throng wanting more.
Bjork - never gets old seeing this songstress perform.
Rage Against The machine - the boys are back!!!
Kate Nash - rousing set from this London artist.
The price:
You can't go wrong with a massive day for what you pay.

Now the negative points:
Food prices:
$16 for a Nandos burger meal - as much as I like the tangy zest of a Nando's chicken burger, this was a little steep!
The Security:
Didn't do much "security" - spent most of the day leering at pretty girls and generally being no help.
The dust:
By the end of the day had dust in every orifice of my body - a bit of grass would have been nice.
The seating:
Or lack there of - it is a little hard sitting and eating your $16 Nando'd chicken burger in the dirt!
The Shade:
What shade?????

But for all the negative points, this ounter will still be first in line for tickets next year, because where else can you see a great line up of bands so close to the city?

Til BDO 2009!!!!

The Candle that burned too bright

January 23rd 2008 04:38
Another sad day for the acting fraternity as one more young actor leaves us too early. With the sad passing of Heath Ledger we are reminded of others who have left us before their time. from icons such as James Dean and the legendary Ms Monroe, actors who have left their mark on popular culture and made an impact on the consiousness of us all have been like candles that have burned far too bright for far too short a time.
As we come to terms with another life's promise unfulfilled, we must remeber that Heath was a loving father, son and friend to many, who are now left with a greater hole than can ever be imagined.

RIP

Why TV sport is getting better

July 24th 2007 02:08
Last Saturday night was FANTASTIC!!! It was a sports lovers dream - more sport on TV than you could poke a stick at.
It was the perfect night in a lot of respects. A great excuse to have some friends around, to order some pizzas (went with The Hut this time - not too shabby!) and have a couple of quiet ales while watching 7 hours plus of entertaining sport.
It started early with the Rugby Union on cable. Although I didn't hold out much hope for the Australians, I was loking forward to the contest - final result New Zealand victorious. A disappointing start to the evening but there was lots of sport to go.
The next 4 hours were spent flicking chanels at an alarming rate. We had the soccer (Asian Cup) quarter final between Australia and Japan on cable plus two AFL matches - one on cable and one on free to air. There was also a Major league Baseball match on cable to watch as well.
The soccer went pear shaped with the aussies losing on penalties (the Japanese contingent in the house were happy to say the least) but the other games were at least worth a watch.
Finally, to send us in to the wee small hours , was the British Open Golf on cable - What a night of Sport!!!
I sometimes complain that for the amount of money I spend on cable TV every month that there is really not that much on, but when you get Saturday nights like the one just gone - it is worth every penny!

Potter secrets out - why spoil it?

July 18th 2007 01:24
Just seen a disturbing report on one of the news sites that I regulary look at when I should actually be working. The new Harry Potter book has been leaked and is available online! Every page is currently available on some of the file sharing sites that are outside the countries where copyright laws would prevent things like this happening.
the question needs to be asked - WHY?? Why would someone want to ruin the joy of millions of people who have been looking forward to the final book for months?
Some blogs are alrady discussing who has died in the book - again - WHY

With Australia just scrapping through to the quarter finals and Japan managing to finish top of their group, it has set up a tantalising battle in the knockout stage of the Asian Cup.
But a much bigger battle is brewing - the batle for bragging rights in my household which will be determined by the winner. How does that work you ask? Well, that is what happens when an Australian sports bloke marries a Japanese princess (not a real princess mind you!)
This will not be the first time that battle lines will have been draw. Who can forget that memorable night last year when the Aussie warriors came back from the brink and defeated the Japanese rabble! I must say, I was a little nervous after we let in an early goal and could not peg it back as time ticked away and I was a little annoyed at the chants coming from the sports chick as we watched the game togther. But all that was forgotten in the space of 10 wonderful minutes when we came back from the brink and smashed our foes

New Harry Potter movie experience

July 17th 2007 03:27
Just been to see the new Harry Potter flick - the Order of the Phoenix. Can your view on the quality of the movie be influenced by were you see the movie and when?
I saw the movie on a Saturday night at 6:30pm. I don't usually see movies at that time as I would normally be doing more constructive things than sitting on my butt for 3 hours on my weekend. But seeing as it was a pretty crappy day weatherwise, and my football team was not on TV until 8:30pm, it seemed like a great opportunity to waste a couple of hours.
I went to a big movie complex in the inner suburbs - my regular (I even used some discount coupons to save a couple of bucks - tight wad that I am!) I grabbed my popcorn and waited for the movie to start

The problem with Barry

July 17th 2007 01:08
Barry Bonds - the man who can bring forth a wide range of emotions in all sports fans. The problem being that most emotions are of the negative variety.
As a baseball fan in Australia I would like to offer some thoughts.
What's not to like about Barry? Well, quite a few things. His chase of the hallowed home run record is tainted by accusations of steroid use. His surly attitude when it comes to the press is legendary and his current slump (0 in more than 20 at bats!) has him hurting the SF Giants in their quest for wins. (the other days 0 for 5 effort was pretty shambolic - he even admitted as such when he said he was disgusted to wear the Giants uniform - I couldn't agree more although I have different reasons

Welcome the Bulls!

July 16th 2007 10:35
I thought I had better get the explanations out of the way first - the title of this blog. Durham is a town in America that was the setting of one of my favorite movies of all time - Bull Durham. This movie combines some of the things that I love - sport and movies. I will, in future posts, let you in on some of my thoughts on these very subjects, plus some other bits and pieces here and there. And what better place to start than the movie my blog is named after.

For the uninformed, Bull Durhan is a movie about the crazy world of minor league baseball. Why crazy, I hear you ask? Well, minor league baseball is like the AFL or NRL, except for the following facts - less money and no fame. players in the minor leagues have more chance of making the Major Leagues in America than Britney Spears has of becoming a Rhodes Scholar
