Syracuse Eyeing Final Four Return
October 22nd 2011 07:29
After a disappointing second round tournament loss to Marquette last season the Syracuse Orange are looking to return to the Final Four for the first time since the days of Carmelo Anthony. Losing only Rick Jackson to graduation the Orange return 4 starters and are loaded with talent. Seniors PG Scoop Jardine and SF Kris Joseph are looking to improve on their impressive junior campaigns. Joseph has been selected to the preseason All Big East first team, while Jardine earned second team honors. Rounding out the starting lineup will be C Fab Melo, PF Baye Moussa Keita and SG Brandon Triche. Melo and Keita, both sophmores, are still projects but their athleticism has never been in doubt. Head coach Jim Boeheim has been very successful in the past developing interior big men, so look for both of these players to be much improved. Triche, in his junior season, is an all around guard who can score from the outside or penetrate to the basket. He is very physical and should help rebound out of the top of the 2-3 zone. This starting lineup is as good as any in the Big East, but they won't have to do it alone this year.
Syracuse is not known for having a deep bench and strong rotation. This year will be different. Sophmore Dion Waiters was in most top 20 recruiting boards coming out of high school. He struggled at times last season averaging 7 ppg and his return was in doubt most of the offseason. He decided to return to the Orange and he is expected to contribute heavily off the bench. Small forward C.J. Fair was a pleasant suprise and added 6ppg and 4 rebounds in is freshman season last year. At 6'8 he will be a tough matchup off the bench and will be up for sixth man of the year in the conference. Junior SF James Southerland showed tremendous range last season and at 6'8 he will also be a tough matchup for any team next season.
With that 8 man rotation the Orange would compete with any team in the country. But it does not stop there.Syracuse fans are most excited about the trio of incoming freshman that helped Boeheim land a top 5 recruiting class.
Mcdonalds All Americans C Rakeem Christmas and G Michael Carter Williams may not be expected to produce right away, but it will be hard to keep them off the court. Williams is a talented 6'5 guard with tremendous passing and shooting skills. He will be a great compliment to Waiters in the years to come. Christmas will probably be a project but he his atheticism is through the roof and he will be an eventual lottery pick for the NBA. The last freshman signee is G Trevor Cooney, a 6-4 guard who Boeheim believes will be a better shooter than the national championship hero Gerry Mcnamara. It will be hard for all of these players to see much playing time, but it is nice to know your bench is filled with Mcdonald's All Americans.
The Big East is once again the best conference is college basketball and it will be a tough and exciting year for the Orange. However with the talent they have and the experience of Boeheim they are poised for another national championship run. Let's see if the Orange can go out with a bang in maybe their final Big East season.
