The trouble with gossip

Fire goes out for lack of fuel, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.
Proverbs 26:20 (New Living Translation)
One of my fondest memories as a teenager is of playing the game of gossip. In the game, all of the youth group members sat in a circle. One person thought of something to say and whispered it to the person next to them and so forth and so on until the information reached the last person in the circle. No one could repeat what they had whispered, so each person had to whisper what they thought they heard to the next one until the information reached the end of the circle. At the end of the circle, the last person said what they heard and we all laughed hysterically at how much the quotation had changed during its trip around the circle.
Gossip is no laughing matter, but the story can change from person to person as each individual flavors the story with his or her opinion of the situation. Even if the story doesn't change, however, talking about a fellow person's shortcomings to another person can be hurtful.
My challenge to you today is to choose your words carefully, particularly those that you say about other people.
