The story unravels

So I was all excited about finding these cute little black satin shoelaces with skulls on them just in time for Halloween. I bought one pair for my daughter and one pair for my son and relaced their gym shoes.
By day two one of Jake's shoelaces had mysteriously unraveled. This is not something that could happen organically, so I told Jake to stop fiddling with his laces because he was ruining them. He swore it had happened on its own. The laces had to be defective somehow. I didn't buy it because his sister's had held up just fine, and I'm not aware of anything in physics that would cause spontaneous shoelace eruption.
I should have made Jake live with the consequences, but he has only one pair of gym shoes that fit these days and my daughter has several, so I decided to cannibalize and give Jake one of Kenya's laces. Kenya, of course, howled about the injustice of it all.
The very next day, Jake came home from school with ANOTHER unraveled shoelace.
For the life of me I don't know how he's doing it. I didn't even know this was physically possible.
Needless to say, he's back to plain white laces today.
