There is a lot you can do in six hours and eleven minutes. You can almost get through two Lord of the Rings movies. You can get from Kansas City to St. Louis in less time. You can get from Milwaukee to Chicago and back. You can cook a turkey in less time. There is so much you can do in six plus hours, but last night, that is how long it took for the Philadelphia Phillies to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in 19 innings. They played two full games plus one inning all for the price of one game. Several thousand fans stayed until the end, but ESPN cameras did catch several people sleeping and rightfully so. The game didn't get done until after one in the morning eastern time! Fans have school and work they might have had to get to today. Hope they called in sick or took a little vacation time to catch up on sleep. Wilson Valdez got the win for the Phillies after pitching the 19th. He's not a pitcher. He's their second baseman. Valdez joins Brent Mayne of the Colorado Rockies back in 2000 and Rocky Colavito of the New York Yankees back in 1968 as the only position players to get a win on the mound since 1968. Wow! What a game. The two teams didn't get much rest either because they are back on the diamond today for a game that starts at 1:05 ET. Hope they're playing on adrenaline.

Still that wasn't the longest game of the night. That belongs to the collegiate level where Western Carolina beat Elon 10-7 in 20 innings. Their game took six hours and thirty-three minutes. Yikes! You won't see that everyday and I'm guessing almost everyone is happy for that.

NFL fans simply want a season, they want the owners and players to get a new CBA done. Players want a season as well, they want to get paid and they want to play the game they love. Some players are enjoying the lockout, the extra vacation time if you will. We have seen some players get into trouble though. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib comes to mind. Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook also has had some issues this offseason with the law. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis expects crime to rise if there is no football at all this season and he is not talking just NFL players, but the public in general. He says too many people live through the players and their teams. When asked by ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, who conducted the interview, why he thought crime would increase if there is not NFL season, Lewis replied, "There's nothing else to do Sal."

There has been and will continue to be a lot of people that strongly believe that Lewis is wrong and he very well may be. However, when the Saints went on their magical run to the Super Bowl in 2010, there were multiple reports of less crime in New Orleans during Saints games. People wanted to watch the Saints play. Most reasonable people will not go out and commit crimes if there are no NFL games this season. Sunday's captivate NFL fans for much of the day. Without football, some fans undoubtably will commit some petty crimes. It would be interesting to do some research and see if crime does increase. If it does, Lewis would look like a genius. If he's wrong, who's going tell him? He's scary and he'll hit you into next week. Lewis is a smart guy. He wouldn't say something like this unless he's one-hundred percent certain that this could happen. Let's hope we don't get to that point where we see if he's right or not.

The weekend on the ice was certainly entertaining. We'll start with yesterday's game where the Vancouver Canucks scored three five-on-three powerplay goals in a 1:52 span in the second period to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 to take a 3-1 series lead. That is pretty tough to do. How the Sharks kept getting penalties and couldn't stop the Canucks is even more amazing. Prior to the onslaught of penalties against the Sharks, they themselves had five power plays and couldn't take advantage on any of them. You won't win many playoff games when you go 0-5 on the powerplay, and they were at home. This series is done. Expect the Canucks to win game five back in Vancouver to advance to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1994.

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lightning overcame a sluggish and sloppy 3-0 first period deficit scoring five unanswered goals to beat the Boston Bruins 5-3. Once the Bruins got their lead, they tried to sit on it and didn't attack. How many times does this have to happen for teams to realize they need to continue to attack with the lead rather than sit on it? You would think after seeing it once or twice, teams would learn, but this continues to happen. Tim Thomas was suspect in net again for the Bruins. He has had three sub-par games in this series. Whether or not the Lightning can carry their momentum from game four's win into tonight's game five remains to be seen. More on that later.

"Bosh Spice" no more. Chris Bosh, overooked in the regular season thanks to teammates LeBron James and Dywane Wade and some very poor games during the regular season, came alive last night, scoring 34 points in the Miami Heat's 96-85 win over the Chicago Bulls to take a 2-1 series lead. Bosh made 13 of his last 15 shots. He was sensational. Whether or not that carries over into game four remains to be seen. James was a distributor last night, working the point and recording ten assists to go with 22 points. When James plays like he did last night and thinks pass first instead of driving to the bucket, the Heat are much better. James is just that much better at the point than anyone else the Heat have. Yet, James needs to take over games from time to time and use his size and strength to drive to the hoop. James is good at the point every once in a while. He adds a new wrinkle to trying to beat the Heat. But, he shouldn't be trying to do this every game.

Meanwhile, the Bulls are in a lot of trouble. They were awesome in game one, but since then, their offense hasn't been great thanks in part to some fantastic defense by the Heat and they are losing their cool at times ala Joakim Noah uttering a slur on camera after he got taken out in the first quarter of last night's game. I'm guessing that NBA Commissioner David Stern will lay down a heavy fine today on Noah. The Bulls need to win game four tomorrow night. MVP Derrick Rose needs to be a leader and come out with a sense of urgency. If he comes out more focused and leads by example, his teammates will follow

The Miami Heat were embarrassed after game one of the NBA eastern conference finals. They had an extra day in Chicago to think about it thanks to Oprah reserving the United Center on Tuesday. That may have helped. The Miami Heat contained Derrick Rose and the rest of the Chicago Bulls, winning 85-75 to even the series at one-one heading into Sunday's game three. Why the NBA gives this series three full days off is beyond me. It is downright stupid, but that's another story for another time. LeBron James recorded a double-double with 29 points and ten rebounds. He made big shots when he needed to in the fourth quarter. LeBron is slowly becoming a clutch shooter though we have to wait and see what he can do at the end of the game with his team down by one before we can really call him clutch. Dwayne Wade had 24 points. Rose did have 21 points for the Bulls, but he struggled from the floor, going 7 for 23. Ouch! If the Bulls want to win the series, they need him to shoot better than that. Part of it was really good Heat defense. I think you have to give the Heat 65 percent credit for the Bulls bad night. The other 35 percent has to go the Bulls for the futility on offense. Game three should be good.

First off, this is a very sensitive issue. I'll be interested to hear from people just what they think of the situation. Second, I'm not an African American, so I'm not going to try and pretend like I know what people are thinking on this issue. If you don't know, boxer Bernard Hopkins, native of Philadelphia and huge Philadelphia Eagles fan has repeatedly taken unwarranted and unheralded shots at Donovan McNabb. The latest came a couple of days ago when, during a press conference for his upcoming fight, Hopkins volunteered his opinion of McNabb saying among other things, that he [McNabb] is not black enough saying "he's got a tan." Hopkins also said that McNabb doesn't have that nitty gritty mentality that someone coming out of the south side of a city would have, because McNabb grew up in a suburb of Chicago with two parents. There are other things that Hopkins said, but you get the point. I can only speak for myself when I say that Mr. Hopkins is completely ridiculous and he is acting like a fool and an idiot. Should McNabb appologize for his upbringing? Hell no. Hopkins apparently feels that you have to be arrested and have a tough life to be black enough. I feel he is highly wrong on that front. I sincerely hope that Hopkins gets his bell rung in the upcoming fight. McNabb is a good guy and a good QB. He doesn't deserve this malicious assault by Hopkins. Hopkins is a moron and after this, we should not put a microphone in front of him ever again, because nothing he says is worth hearing.

Heat finish off Celtics

May 12th 2011 16:35
Well they did it. The Miami Heat are moving on to the NBA eastern conference finals after beating the Boston Celtics 97-87 last night to take the series 4-1.

LeBron James and Dwayne Wade were huge last night in getting the Heat past the resilient Celtics. Wade kept his team in the game in the first half, scoring 23 of his 34 points in the first half including a ridiculous flip over his shoulder that magically fell into the hoop. In crunch time at the end of the game, it was all about LeBron. He scored the game's final 10 points (part of a 16-0 Miami run to end the game), and finished the game with 33 points

Red Wings-Sharks preview

May 12th 2011 16:33
Only three teams in NHL history have ever come back from a 3-0 series deficit and won. They are the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs who came back to beat Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals, the 1975 New York Islanders over the Pittsburgh Penguins and last year, the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers over the Boston Bruins.

Will we see a fourth 3-0 series comeback tonight? Don't bet against the Detroit Red Wings to do it. They have all the momentum right now. They've played harder than the Sharks the last three games, they're shooting more, they're skating better and they're just getting better overall play than the San Jose Sharks
