It's a full decade until the 2020 Olympic Games and the Hobart City bid has already started to gain some momentum, the bid was officially backed by Tasmanian shadow minister for Sport & Recreation Jacquie Petrusma on June 10. She announced her support for it in her maiden speech to Parliament House in Hobart, joining people like David Bartlett the 43rd premier of Tasmania, the Hobart lord major Rob Valentine, but not only are they all on board but the prime exports of the state David Foster World Champion Axeman, Tim Franklin Logie award winning local media identity.

Tasmania has a rich sporting history with Australian Rules Footballers being our major sporting export, Tasmanian cricket is on the rise with the Ford Ranger Cup, and Pura Cup finding it's home in Tasmania in recent times. Ricky Ponting and David Boon being our best known crickers. The state has produced several Olympic medalists including many gold, in sports ranging from Hockey to Rowing. It also has a proud Basketball history, with it's local side the Hobart Chargers being the most dominant team in the South East Australian Basketball League over the last decade.

Then we head towards other sports that Tasmania has produced great sporting icons, sports like Motor racing, rowing, woodchopping, did you know that Woodchopping has been one of the most popular sports in the state? David Foster is the greatest of them all, he is the only athlete in sporting history to have won 1000 championships in any given sport and has completely dominated the sport over the last 30 years.

Recently Marcos Ambrose was back-to-back VB Supercar champion before heading off to the NASCAR over in the states, rowing has been a sport that Tasmania has excelled in, and even tecently we have ourselves some cyclists. But what does this have to do with the Olympics? Well Hobart is looking to become the next destination for the games, sure, I hear you saying "Hobart? That small place surely you are taking the piss?" I had thought the same when I had heard that Hobart City was looking to Host them.

But for now Brisbane Queensland has been pre-selected by the Australian Olynpic Committee as the most likely bid city possibly within 15-20 years which has been further endorsed by Queensland premier Anna Bligh, and Brisbane Lord Mayor Campell Newman. The City previously had a bit for the 1992 Olympics, coming in third to Barcelona and Paris.

So Hobart's unlikely bid has a lot of work to do before it can gain enough weight to be considered, sure there is probably no chance of the games coming to Tasmania, but there are many that are daring to dream.

The idea to bring the Olympics to Hobart began back in 2005 on the then radio show called JAB Schoolies on Edge Radio. Started by Ben Waterworth and Anthony Moran. It was a joke created as an attempt to show Hobartians, and Tasmanians that if you think big, it can maybe pay off with the biggest sport the Summer Olympic Games could in fact become a reality in Hobart City.

Now the bid has grown a lot of legs, and has it's own website located http://hobart2020.org/ and 8000 people on it's official facebook have shown their interest to bring the games to the Apple Isle.

It will be interesting to see how the bid goes, and if this dream of a handful of Hobartians, and Tasmanians starts to gain more momentum, or if it will just be another massive flop like many other Tasmanian sporting bids over the years.

Chris Bryan signs with the Packers

March 21st 2010 12:23
Chris Bryan has finally been signed by an NFL side to punt, he signs with the Green Bay Packers, the former Collingwood and Carlton ruckman was reportedly close to signing a contract with someone in early January, but now it's set in stone. Bryan has signed a 3 year non-guaranteed contract, he will be competing for the punter position with another recruit Tim Masthay. The two are going to go head to head in the Green Bay August training camp, should the former AFL star win a contract with the Packers he will join two other former AFL stars, former Collingwood and North Melbourne forward Saverio Rocca, who is currently a punter with the Philadelphia Eagles, and former Geelong Captain and current Arizona punter Ben Graham.

They are not the only Australians in the NFL, Dallas Cowbays' Mat McBriar who also played football, but not in the AFL was recruited to Dallas via the Univeristy of Hawaii. As reported in my other sports blog on Chris Bryan he was recruited via the Nathan Chapman's Prokick Australia program. Chapman, the former Brisbane and Hawthron player helps Australians who are looking to become a player at either NFL or College level as punters, or kickers.

According to the program, and USFootynews.com the progam has placed 3 students to US colleges with full scholarships, and a player to Arena Football, and with Bryan signing a student with the program to the NFL.

Chris Bryan, next NFL punter?

March 11th 2010 14:14
It seems that Chris Bryan, a former ruckman for both Collingwood and Carlton in the AFL could be heaed to the NFL to join an NFL side as a punter. The rumour was that in February the ruckman who was de-listed from the Collingwood list in October was close to signing a deal with an NFL side once his dream of playing AFL again this season was dealt a blow when Hawthorn, the team he was hoping to be drafted by decided to take former Bulldog Wayde Skipper, and not Bryan.

Former AFL player and NFL punter Nathan Chapman who is Director and Coach of Prokick Australia with ex NFL and CFL free agent placekicker John.A.Smith. ProKick Australia is an American Football punting and placekicking school in Australia which trains and assesses Australians to the standard required for NCAA,NFL and CFL punting and placekicking positions has been reportedly looking to send Bryan to the NFL.

ProKick Australia had current Brisbane Rookie Sam Coulston, and former AFL star Nick Davis trying out to become punters, well Sam was invited along by fan of the program team mate Jonathon Brown, who has had interest himself, should his AFL career come to an end.

Currently Nick Davis is looking to become an NFL punter, his AFL career has come to an end, and he was supposedly also close to signing with an NFL team as well. It seems to be an interestinf development if Chris Bryan does sign with an NFL team, some would say he was a below average footballer with both Carlton and Collingwood, with the Magpies he showed a bit of talent and looked like he might have been able to assist the Magpies in their ruck problems, but struggling to break on through to the Pies best 22 all season he was let go.

His former team mate, and brother of current Eagle punter Saverio Rocca, Anthony Rocca is also looking to become a punter himself, taking one year off to heal his body. So can Bryan take the step from being an average footballer to an NFL punter?

It doesn't seem like a stretch, it seems more surprising that he would go this route, but it does seem that a lot of former AFL players are looking at maybe going through the motions of being an NFL punter. I still wonder, will we ever see an NFL player switch codes, and remove the pads to be an AFL footballer? I doubt they will, not because of the pad things that sees many Australians bag the sport of the NFL, but just the development of skills, a ruckman for example generally takes 4-5 years to break into being a servicable ruckman, and it will take the player some time to pick up the game as well, Marty Clarke of Gaelic Football fame managed to pick up the game fast and became a talented player for the Magpies before he called it quits and headed back to Ireland.

So far there has been no reports on him signing yet with a club, nor has there been a report of Nick Davis and how he was going in his quest to join the ranks of the NFL. Fun times ahead for the man known as "Bear" I am sure a lot of Collingwood supporters are wishing Chris "Bear" Bryan all the best, if they aren't, well I am, good luck Chris, I hope you can find yourself an NFL career.

Matildas steal a dramatic win

March 6th 2010 14:52
Today's international women's friendly between Australia and DPR Korea was anything but a friendly game with the game turning into a drama when the Koreans were penalised with a penalty before half time saw them all walk from the field and remain there for at least 4 minutes before they finally got back onto the pitch and allowed Katie Gill to take and score the penalty, she took the penalty before the Koreans came back onto the pitch but it was disallowed and we were allowed to start again.

But before that Sarah Walsh in the 25th minute started the scoring for the game, giving Australia a 1-nil lead but eight minutes later Yun Mi Jo equalised but then the drama happened a penalty was awarded and then it was converted in injury time by Katie Gill giving Australia a 2-1 lead into the break. The penalty caused the Koreans to leave the field angry, the 5th ranked side grabbed drinks and would not listen to the referee before finally going back on

Ford Ranger Cup Final

February 27th 2010 10:14
An exciting finish to the 2009/2010 Australian Cricket Summer is on the way as the Bushrangers look to claim all 3 domestic cups this season, for the first time ever, that stat was easy to find out because they haven't won this competition since 1998/99 when Paul Reiffel took 2/30 the last time this game was played on the 28th. It's their fourth final in a row but they've lost twice to the Bulls at the G and once to the Tigers in Hobart in between. This time it's the Tigers at the G, and they haven't lost a final since 1986/87, although they've only made two in that time and five in the history of one day cricket - losing in 77/78, winning a year later, losing in 86/87, winning in 04/05 and again in 07/08.

As if it wasn't going to be hard enough to get people to go and watch North play Freo. It's cheaper too and they've made it even cheaper with an adult can take a child for free offer. The Tigers have found the going hard against the Bushrangers this season, and have already coughed up over 300 runs against them in a past one day encounter this summer, the Tigers came from last to make the final after their two big wins, one against the Bulls and another against the Redbacks, and now they are attempting a massive achievement, and it would be good for Tasmanian cricket if the Tigers could get over the line

Bolton joins Heart, could Aloisi too?

February 18th 2010 14:49
The Melbourne Heart have this week completed the signing of Sydney FC goalkeeper Clint Bolton who was told a month ago he would not be getting a new contract with the team. Bolton has been strong in the goals for the sky blues this season, and came as a surprise that he was leaving the team. Bolton managed to keep the Victory out on Sunday to claim the premiers plate but it seems strange for the team to keep him as their keeper during their finals campaign to claim the A League Title.

It was a tough day at the office this evening for Bolton, the Victory managed to get two goals past him first it was Nik Mrdja who scored his very first Victory goal during his loan spell early in the game and then Carlos Hernandez. His departure has been followed by Steve Corica who retired during this week after an injury. Clint Bolton seems to be very happy to have found himself a new club, while it brings in the concern that would you play a player who is not going to be at the club next season during an intense battle for a title? Surely Bolton would be keen to go out a winner and not go out a loser if he had the chance

Shane Watson wins Allan Border Medal

February 15th 2010 12:36
All-rounder Shane Watson has capped off a magnificent summer of cricket by tonight winning the Allan Border Medal and One day player of the year for the first time tonight. Watson was honoured during the black tie function tonight with his fellow Test opening batsman Simon Katich taking the Test Award also for the first time tonight.

The three first year winners of awards was a strong reflection that Australian cricket is making the transition and that the team is getting stronger then it has ever been. Shane Watson 28, has suffered many injuries throughout his career including many hamstring related problems but this summer has has been nothing short of amazing for the Australian cricket team

Sydney FC have claimed their first ever A League Premier's player and an Asian Champions League berth with a massive 2-nil win over rivals Melbourne at the Sydney Football Stadium. A first-half wonder goal from midfielder Karol Kisel, and arguably an even better strike by in-form striker John Aloisi in the second saw Sydney leap above the Victory.

The Sky Blues finish the home-and-away season a single point clear of the Melbourne Victory and have bragging rights head of their clash with the Victory in the first week of the A-League finals. The win couldn't have come in more spectacular fashion, in front of the 25,407 fans this was the Sydney Fc's biggest ever home and away crowd and their biggest win for this season. The win also give them a huge mental boost heading into their opening match of the finals series, the major semi-final first leg against the Victory at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night
