Back After Minor Health Scare

September 5th 2008 23:32
I am sure some of you noticed a few days ago that I had quit posting to my blogs. The reason for this little mini vacation was because I was in the hospital dealing with some stroke like symptoms. I am fine now, though I do need to make some major dietary adjustments, and some minor lifestyle changes to try to get my cholesterol numbers in order. Apparently, I suffer from metabolic syndrome - That is when you have several risk factors for heart disease as well as high triglycerides. Mine are through the moon, and I am going to have to go cold turkey on sugar. Amazingly, I feel that my entire adult life has led up to this moment. That moment that we realize that we are all mortal, and that we will not live forever. I am sorry for the lack of posts, and will be back online from here on with the daily updates that you are accustomed to.

I thank each of you for your prayers, and heartily request some for the future. Now, back to the grind (though with a lot less sugar)!!!!!

The Town That Dreaded Sundown is without a doubt a perfect example of bad horror movies gone good. That is, their are parts of this movie that are painfully bad, yet you simply must watch it due to the visceral suspense and creepiness.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown is loosely based on a series of murders that happened in the forties around Texarkana, Arkansas. This killer, known as the Phantom, kills kids along lover's lanes, as well as attacking a couple in their home.

The movie is done in a semi-documentary style made famous in early crime dramas. This lends a serious, this actually happened element to the film. The killer also is particularly spooky as he wears a white hood over his head. The killer tends to be extremely sadistic, and it is widely known that the real killer was as well.

True story is a bit of a stretch. The trombone scene never actually happened, though a girl was murdered that owned a trumpet. The murders are largely correct, though embellished a bit for dramatic effect.

All in all, The Town That Dreaded Sundown is one of the slasher genre's earliest attempts, and aside from some rather silly comic relief scenes, it is most effective. The murder scenes are very scary, though in a classic sort of way. The killer is far more scary than many modern day movie killers because he has the added mystery of being based on a real one.

If you have not seen The Town That Dreaded Sundown, it is highly recommended that you check it out if serial killer horror is your cup of tea. It will spook you even now.

Update- It is said that The Town That Dreaded Sundown is actually in pre-production of a remake. It will be titled The Moonlight Murders and is being made as we speak. It will be interesting to see if it is as good as the old one.

The scariest horror movies of all time are the ones that are feasible. Those horror movies that could actually happen in real life are the ones that truly reach into your gut and twist. A great horror movie simply must make you feel as though you are there. While some movies clearly could happen in real life, others ride the edge but still keep that possibility alive.

Here are my top ten scariest horror movies that could happen in real life:

10. The Exorcist - It certainly can be debated whether or not this could happen in real life, but many claim that it has. That is enough to send shivers down your back while watching this movie. The horror is primitive, but very effective.

9. Halloween - The original movie was absolutely horrifying. It was not that far from reality that this could happen right in your own hometown. I watched this for the first time sitting at a friends house on Halloween night. The walk home that night was very spooky. This also sports the best horror soundtrack of all time.

8. Wolf Creek - Lots of folks did not like this movie, but for sheer ferocity there are few that match it. The killer was so unusual that it gave the movie a weird vibe. That vibe goes into overdrive as the movie goes along. If you have not seen this, then you certainly should go and check it out. Be ready for some gruesome scenes.

7. Psycho - Are you kidding me? Old or not, this was one spooky horror movie. What a brilliant movie that was light years ahead of it's time this was.

6. The Shining - The madness that overwhelms Jack in this movie is something that I will never forget. It is without a doubt one of the scariest movies of all time.

5. Alien - The original was absolutely scary. This movie gets bonus points for scaring the hell out of me without it being overly realistic. Lots of folks believe in Aliens, so it is not that far fetched. The creature was all that was needed.

4. Jaws - This movie is the mother of all animal attack flicks. By far the best of the genre, it scares you as much today as it did back then. The sounds, the acting, the shark and of course, the music all play together to scare you to death. The ocean will never be the same after watching this classic horror movie.

3. The Evil Dead - This movie gave me chills from start to finish. In spite of a tiny budget, the movie still taps into our inner fears quite effectively. The scene with the trees attacking the woman is frightening to the core. As this is actually quite unrealistic, the good versus evil element opens it up to the reality audience.

2. Saw - This movie was original, scary, and incredibly difficult to watch without being disgusted. What more can you hope for from a horror movie? Top to bottom, it scared me to death.

1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original) - This movie is the ultimate in scary. The grainy way in which the movie is filmed adds that element of watching a home movie from hell, and the sheer idea of what is happening on the screen is terrifying. Add to that some innovative ideas, and the ultimate villain, and you have a horror masterpiece. Leatherface is scary just by standing there.

The movie claimed to be based on a true story. Truth is, it was based very loosely on the Ed Gein murders. The actual similarities in the case and the movie though are few. (Though Gein did wear the skin of his victims)

These choices are sure to spark debate among horror fans, and I am certain that there are other deserving titles. These just happen to be my scariest movies of all time.

What are yours?
