The Sin Bin - by llaw

Off you go... Germaine Greer

September 7th 2006 10:34
We can't overlook this person this particular week. Germaine Greer, you deserve sometime in the sin bin for your comments regarding Steve Irwin.

The death of the 'Crocodile Hunter' managed to make news bullitins across the United States and Europe, deeply shocking and impacting fans. The stunned feeling was probably felt more so outside of Australia, and the shock within Irwin's home country was already stunning! Yes, we may have had some doubts about the way he carried on and what image he was giving to Australia, however let's face it, he was still entertaining when it came to his live appearance at major events - one must remember the logies when he tripped and the snake he was holding at the time managed to bite the inside leg of Tim Webster.

But anyways...

Germaine, the day after Irwin's death wrote her opinion in 'The Guardian' Newspaper (UK) showing no sympathy nor a deal of respect for someone that had captivated a major audience AND put in an amazing amount of energy into wildlife conservation.

Greer takes a stab at sarcasm at Irwin's job and persona:

You can just imagine Irwin yelling: "Just look at these beauties! Crikey! With those barbs a stingray can kill a horse!" (Yes, Steve, but a stingray doesn't want to kill a horse. It eats crustaceans, for God's sake.)

Then carries on about the questionable incident with his son... and has a go at those involved (both workers and patrons) of the Australia Zoo as well:

The only time Irwin ever seemed less than lovable to his fans (as distinct from zoologists) was when he went into the Australia Zoo crocodile enclosure with his month-old son in one hand and a dead chicken in the other. For a second you didn't know which one he meant to feed to the crocodile. If the crocodile had been less depressed it might have made the decision for him.

The adoring world was momentarily appalled. They called it child abuse. But that's entertainment at Australia Zoo.

But above all, she writes the animal world has had their revenge on Irwin:

The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn.

Radio talk show programs across Sydney were inundated yesterday with outraged people wanting to show disgust for Ms Greer.

Germaine, besides being very insensitive and outraging many many many people, you have embarrassed yourself.

And for this, Germain Greer,
Off you go... to the Sin Bin!
