Overdue

June 4th 2008 14:05
The balancing act of managing the guild and managing my life has been slightly out of whack these past few days. The guild has been consuming a lot of our time lately with several personnell issues that have needed attention. I realize that I'm failing as a blogger right now - I barely have time to live my life let alone write about it.

More later...I have to go deal with an overbearing boss right now...

Looking down the rabbit hole

In 2006, a high level study on guild management was conducted - the Daedalus Project: Click here

Basically, they spoke with 280 different guild leaders in order to better understand the role.

Personally, I don't know any differently. I began gaming and leading a guild at about the same time, so leading, is, and has been the gaming experience for me for the past 6 years.

I started playing MMOs on a dare. My ex was excited about a new game that was coming out (Ascheron's Call 2) and he and his friends spoke about it at length. I recall one night at a cocktail party he (Mr. X) was saying that he wanted me to start playing the game with him. One of Mr.X's friends, Broto, laughed and proclaimed that "gaming isn't for girls." Having spent my formitable years as a tomboy, I took that as a direct challenge and muttered, "we'll see about that." On the way home from the party, I told Mr. X that I would, in fact, play the game with him. If, for no other reason, than to prove to Broto that I could be just as good, if not better, than him at the game.

Shortly after creating my first character and learning to simply navigate the game, Mr. X, Broto, and Ren made me their guild leader (known as a monarch). They all swore allegiance to me so we could create a community of our own. At the time, I had no idea what a Guild Leader was or what was expected of me, but I approached the role as a project challenge and began down this path of guild management.

I think back to that day and wonder how different my life would be had I not agreed to lead. Had I known what goes into leading a guild, I don't know if I would have started down this path. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it (most days); however, successfully leading a guild is huge undertaking that requires a lot of time, effort, money, patience, and sacrifice. It's times like these, when talking about it, that I realize how completely unconventional my life really is.

I hope you enjoy going down the rabbit hole with me....

Being a Guild Leader is the most difficult job that I have ever paid to do.

My boyfriend and I manage a guild of ~80 people in the World of Warcraft. We have a very diverse member base, which creates some entertaining (and sometimes disturbing) topics of conversation.

The purpose of this blog will be to introduce readers to our team of officers, our guild members, and the daily challenges we're faced with as we try to keep this unique community together.
