The Blog Formerly Known As Saturday Morning Movie Club - by Lizard68591

My Rating System - I won't be using thumbs or stars or any of the other already taken [and may I say unoriginal] symbols. Instead my affinity for a film [or lack thereof] will be illustrated by clocks. Strange perhaps, but also practical. When you see as many movies as I do you end up seeing a significant amount of crap. The crappier the movie the more times I find myself checking the time. So here's the deal...there will be a scale from zero to 5. For those who have yet figured it out a rating of 5 clocks will be awarded to such horrific Hollywood debacles as Steven Spielberg's A.I. and zero stars will be reserved only for those movies that rise to the level of this summer's Little Miss Sunshine.

The Preacher's Wife - 3 Clocks

October 21st 2006 23:53
I should start by mentioning that I sat down to watch The Preacher’s Wife expecting to see something along the lines of A Perfect Murder…ya know adulterous wife, suspicious death and a handful of steamy sex scenes. I was wrong.

The Preacher’s Wife is the story of a man who has lost his faith, and like A Perfect Murder it has all the essential ingredients of a movie in its genre. A man of God, a devoted wife, an adorable child and an angel to place all the others back on their rightful path. But what this movie lacks in novelty is makes up for with heart.

Penny Marshall does a wonderful job of reminding her audience that a good movie doesn’t require a mysterious plot or special effects. Sometimes the appeal is the characters and the journey and the smile that you leave the theater with. Oh yeah and alittle Denzel never hurts either.

I have always believed that mood and expectations can be just as determinative of a person’s movie watching experience as the plot itself. And an audience that wants blood and guts won’t be able to appreciate a beautiful love story. So if your looking for an edge of your seat thriller I wouldn’t suggest The Preacher’s Wife, but then again maybe I would…
