The Paper

This is a short story that I did for my writers group, we had to include a fountain pen, the London Eye and a donkey in under 500 words, hope you enjoy.
The Paper A short story by Hal 68 copyright 2006
David glanced out of the window, the rain causing the dirty streaks upon the glass. He looked at the wind sweeping rubbish along the empty street and remembered how different things used to be.
Just then a NSS landrover cruised slowly past, the rain giving it a sinister look as beads of water reflected off the darkened tinted windows. David took a step backwards away from the window as the vehicle slowed to a stop. For a moment he wondered if they had spotted his shadow through the net curtains but then there was a smash of glass and the sudden roar of flame as a molotov cocktail landed just in front of where the landrover had stopped.
With a screech of tires, it leapt forward towards the unknown assailants and out of sight around the corner. David gave a sign of relief as everyone knew what happened once the National Security Service got a hold of you.
As he sat back at his desk, picking up his fountain pen, he remembered back to how it all started, the bombing of Windsor Castle, the plague infected donkey running loose in Shrewsbury town centre, with the resulting collapse of the Labour Alliance govt and the rise of the National Security Party which gained power just afterwards.
It was small things at first, small liberties that people accepted had to go, so to be safe from the so called terrorists, but who were these people? And how was it that an attack seemed to happen just when the govt needed one to strengthen their hold upon the public.
Bu then David gave a cold smile, ‘Nothing lasts forever’ he muttered to himself as he started on this weeks edition of the underground paper The London Eye.
He knew what would happen if he was found out but some one had to tell the truth of what was happening and as much as the NSS tried, they had not been able so far to locate him and the all seeing London Eye.
He headed up the title ‘Things the NSS chairman would rather you didn’t know’
1 The resettlement camps in Wales aren’t really that as no one comes back from them.
2 He wears a toupe
3 How quickly they reacted to the bombings, makes you wonder how they could react so fast? Unless they knew in advance?
David laid his pen down and rubbed his eyes, ‘Hmm need a drink’ he thought, taking a bottle of the shelf.
