The Now Thing Is Being Lost to the Next Thing

April 4th 2011 15:36
Daily life seems to be spinning out of control for most people and going by much too quickly for everyone. It is almost like one day feeds into another without so much as a little comma in between. In our fast paced lives of convenience, transportation and communication, we have less and less time for exploring the meaning and purpose of life.

Sometimes we are in such a hurry to go from here to there or from this to that – our lives seem to lose an element of reality. Even our conversations are hurried and harried because the “next thing” is closer to our mind than our current discussion.

We live in a “next thing” kind of world where we look forward to the next car, the next president the next paycheck, the next American Idol, the next world crisis, the next scientific breakthrough, the next natural catastrophe, the next scandal and the cycle is unending. In the process, we do not stop to enjoy, much less recognize the “now thing.”

People frequently ask questions like, "What is the next big thing that God will do?" Or “what is going to happen to our country?” Such questions reveal something much deeper than the question itself. They indicate our lives are defined by future events rather than by what is taking place in the moment. As soon as we enter into the next event on our calendar, we are already thinking toward the “next thing”.

While “next things” may be reality and even require our current attention, we must not become so caught up in the “next thing” that we miss out on the “now thing”. Otherwise, life will become a meaningless blur. When we live our lives focused on the “next thing”, we quickly reach the point where the end of life on earth becomes the “now thing”, and we are left asking, “Where did it all go?”

Jesus made a very profound statement while He was living on the earth. He said, "I only do what I see the Father doing." Jesus knew the secret to living life with meaning and purpose in the NOW! However, it is not enough to know the secret, we must apply it NOW.
