The New Exercise Craze - It's free!
February 1st 2007 12:00
Use it or loose it! I'm sure you have all heard that expression, but when it comes to exercising, we all conjure up thoughts of hard yakka in the gym, unused memberships and those useless Ab-rollers!
New Year's resolutions are a god send for gyms world wide. Personally, we take the Buddha path to exercise - everything in moderation - including food and exercise. Most people start out enthusiastic about getting into shape and find that they struggle to keep routines and only go because they have paid up front for a full year (silly you!) - you know how many handbags you could have bought?! (I know 'cause Sheetal has a stack). Anyway, I have found the perfect exercise you can do even while on holidays and the best thing is its free - it’s called WALKING! My partner and I go on walks nearly everyday. Not only is it a chance to catch up, but its actually good for you. Let's look at the benefits:
1. It's free - you only have to buy half-decent clothing, unless you’re like Sheetal and want to make a fashion statement.
2. It's good for you - any cardiovascular and pulmonary (that's heart and lungs) exercise will get your joints moving and blood pumping. As former bodybuilder and US T.V show host Jack LaLanne (who is 92 by the way and fit as god damn fiddle) says:
"That's what I am saying. You have to take care of your 640 muscles, and the number one thing is exercise. You can eat perfectly but if you don't exercise, you cannot get by. There are so many health food nuts out there that eat nothing but natural foods but they don't exercise and they look terrible. Then there are other people who exercise like a son-of-a-gun but eat a lot of junk. They look pretty good because the exercise is king. Nutrition is queen. Put them together and you've got a kingdom!"
3. Get your free dose of Vitamin D from the Sun.
4. You can even see how the property market is doing by noticing how many houses are up for sale!
There's your blooming lot for today -- now go out (hopefully its not raining) and take a 30 minute walk and tell me that you don't feel better for doing so!

Good on you, keep it up! Research shows that it only takes 30 mins of regular exercise to keep you healthy. And by regular, it means 3 times a week. Working it into your daily routine like you have also encourages you to keep that commitment.
