The NBA Cares
September 24th 2008 12:40
I was doing my daily check of ESPN.com and I came across a few articles about some present and past NBA players such as Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudamire, Jonathan Bender, etc. These articles were documenting how these players have taken time out to help people less fortunate than they are. For example, Amare Stoudamire went to Sierra Leone to help build safe water wells, Jonathan Bender has helped to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Ryan Gomes created Hoops for Heart Health to prevent sudden cardiac arrest, and Charlie Villanueva won the August NBA Community Assist Award for his charitable work within the community. It is good to read stories like that and to see NBA programs such as NBA Cares and Basketball with Borders that use the sport to touch the lives of people less fortunate. Especially with the recent stories of Josh Howard, Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur, and Michael Beasley, it is rather easy to label the NBA as a league full of thugs. Maybe stories like these will help to change that in some way.
