Know The Weird Laws

July 31st 2009 20:29
Sometimes you may visit a foreign country or state and find that they have laws that can get you in trouble, especially if they are enforced. Decades ago, I visited an African Muslim country and we were warned not to knock a woman's veil or burka off, even by accident. Weird as it sounded we warned.

So beware if you are traveling to a foreign country, or city, or even a state. Laws might change and sometimes a weird law is very much enforced. Here's an article and list of weird laws that travelers should be aware of!

In Milan you always have to smile, and in Massachusetts remember to always sit in the front seat of a cab. Yes, some of these laws are outright ridiculous. In Hong Kong there are probably the least amount of cheating men spouses, because the mistresses are rare!!!

Nanny Hypocrites

July 21st 2009 21:17
Although bullying is a natural order of life, in today's world our sensitivity leads us to try to eliminate it. Bullying is bad, although most of us were subject to it during our school years. It's known as the pecking order or the totem pole establishment of order. Yes I was bullied in my elementary school days, but many of us had the intelligence to band with others that were bullied. We soon became outcasts or nerds but at least we looked out for each other.

This is not about if bullying is good or evil. It's about hypocrisy and tolerance.

I can't speak for the world, but in the US over the past couple of decades there has been a push to stop bullying among children. Especially in schools, parks and playgrounds. England is known for nannies, tolerance and the village raising children think-tank idea by Hillary Clinton!

A mother is banned from her son's school because she confronted a bully who used her son as a punching bag. Since we have only heard the woman's testimony, lets just assume she is accurate for the sake of argument. So she was civil to her son's bully as she confronted him. God bless her...but I'm skeptical.

I like the headmistress' made for TV name. Pip Utting. Piputting? OK, lets start a contest as to how we can make the name to mean something. Maybe you're 'piputting' if you were bullied as a child but turn a blind-eye when it happens to others!

The order of bullying is to teach your kids to fight and stick up for themselves. The mother learned that being nice and throwing parties to invite the bullies makes you a 'sap'! It also gets your kid bullied more at school where there are audiences that either fear or cheer the bully.

Maybe I should give a few ways to fight bullying. Sometimes you do have to get your butt kicked. Sad but true. Either way children should be taught to fight, even if it means taking karate or boxing classes.

There is strength in numbers, remember that, so find others that are in your league!

It is unfortunate, but there is still a pecking order in society as a whole. Women are more against bullying than men. If men are against it they are either lying or on the lower end of the totem pole.

Do you know that society has certain 'unwritten' rules?

A Boy Named Berta

July 20th 2009 00:06
Has anyone seen a moving ant-hill that escaped from a circus? A massive tortoise that escaped from a circus was found and returned.

What do you think that Peta will have to say about it?

Don't look now(but since I'm on a roll)here comes a Petard update...

In the ever continuing saga of invasive species, I would like to warn about invaders in Florida and California. Although this article makes fun of politicians wasting the taxpayers' money and time, one should really consider a python a threat.

I was once heavily involved in the herpetile trade and can say that many idiots keep dangerous animals as pets. Too many of these pets escape and become part of the ecosystem which they destroy. These pythons can and do feed on cats, dogs and domestic animals, not to mention established wildlife. Someday I'll share stories that will scare even those who live in the arctic

The End Of The Space Race

July 16th 2009 23:01
July 16, 1969 was the official end of The Space Race. Apollo 11 had taken off for a mission to the moon. Four days later the first men would walk on the moon.

I lived in Europe and many did not believe the US actually landed a man on the moon

Electrical Plant Art

July 15th 2009 19:59
What happens when you send an electrical surge through a metal board with a plant on top? You get some pretty awesome art. Roses, petunias, marijuana, etc., all make some striking electrical art.

Bursting Bubble

July 13th 2009 20:56
I can't remember exactly what it was called, but when I was a kid there was a toy that would make giant bubbles as opposed to that little jar with a wand that kids dip and blow to create bubbles. It may have been 'magic' or 'super' bubble, or something. What it was is a wand about the size of a small dish. You dipped in a dish of soap and then you would wave it in the air to create a giant bubble. Regardless, the fun would be in bursting the short-lived bubble.

So sue me because I'm trying to make conversation. In the meantime, check out a bursting bubble in stunning detail!

I'm Sorry For Being Right!

July 11th 2009 22:28
Regardless what one thinks about global warming, there has been a book published since 1818 that has a calculated formula to predict the weather. It has a pretty impressive record actually.

The Farmers' Almanac is published in Lewiston, ME, each August and predicts regional forecasts 16 months in advance. In August 2008(August is when it is published), it predicted a rainy June for the Northeast. It was right. It amazes me that the editor apologized for being correct!

Webster's New Words

July 10th 2009 21:39
I have an American Heritage Dictionary from the late 70s. That was the last time I bought a dictionary. Maybe I should give in and buy a new one seeing that thousands of words have been added since then.

Webster has released a list of new words that it will add to its dictionary. Soon we will understand a locavore and frenemy. The greener-wieners are now the green-collars(annoyance

Jailed Smokers

July 10th 2009 16:17
Have you ever wondered what would happen if die-hard(ha!) smokers were put in prison with no cigarettes or smoking allowed?

Well this isn't a story of that extreme...as of now, anyway. It's about jailed convicts who have a bad smoking habit and must find ways to beat, or ingenious ways to feed, their habit. This is for any smoker that may be in a no smoking prison

Invading Australia

July 8th 2009 00:56
Invasive species in Australia aren't very kind and can easily wreck havoc to the environment in a short period of time. Read it for yourselves.

One thing we tend to forget is that invasive species aren't only from the animal kingdom. A prickly cactus from Mexico may be dangerous to animals, humans, and cars!

Shark Alert in St. Louis

July 4th 2009 21:41
Bull sharks are fairly aggressive shark that have a built-in mechanism that allows them to live in fresh water. Dubbed the swamp shark, they seem to be at home in Louisiana swamps. The shark has been caught some 900 miles up the Mississippi River in St. Louis.

Learn more about Bull sharks here. The threat was predicted here.

Power of Positive Thinking

July 4th 2009 20:00
There is a new study that claims that positive thinking can make things worse. Positive thinking may lower one's self-esteem. For most people it may work in some way, but for some it can lower their self-esteem much lower than it already might be.

I believe the self-esteem gets lowered because of disappointments in life, more so than the thought process. If someone repeats "I am lovable" and faces disappointment in the real world, it tends to lower their self-esteem

I don't belong to any social network on the web. Putting yourself out on the internet may not always be a good thing. I do have a lot of friends that use social networks and love them.

It seems that the two big social networks may be reflecting society as a whole. MySpace is being compared to a digital ghetto. Facebook seems to be taking on a whole new type of 'white flight' according to the article

Banjo the Dinosaur

July 3rd 2009 23:18
Science must be running out of names for new found species, so they are using names that resemble Michael Jackson son, Blanket. Three new dinosaurs are found in Australia. One was a meat-eater and the others were plant-eaters. Go figure how the plant-eaters look like a Brontosaur. They have been nicknamed Matilda and Clancy.

The meat-eater is Australia's answer to a Velociraptor and has been nicknamed Banjo! It was light and agile and the cheetah of its time, because it could outrun its prey. Like most carnivores of the time, Banjo was ferocious and terrifying

Lethal Weapons Among Us

July 3rd 2009 18:39
Years ago I was a reptile enthusiast. I mostly kept lizards with an occasional snake. I left the trade when I started seeing how people with no knowledge were keeping dangerous animals. Iguanas, boas, pythons, tegus, monitor lizards, poisonous snakes and lizards, and the list goes on. I've also seen some people's incompetence result in escapes and disasters. Somebody's pet was eaten by a python, for example.

Burmese pythons and other jungle snakes should never be kept as pets, in my opinion. I still think this will end in disaster. Snakes are great escape artists, and are silent when they escape. They hunt by detecting the heat(warm blooded) of their prey, along with their tongue that processes air particles in a grove above the mouth called a Jacobson's organ

Day of the Dolphins

July 2nd 2009 15:02
New York City might be under attack by aqua-invaders. The invaders are non other than dolphins! There are an estimated 200 of them in Long Island Sound.

They have split in two different groups and moved near the Bronx and Bayville, Long Island. The president of the Marine Research and Preservation has said this is normal behavior. Maybe we should believe him

The Bees Are Back

July 1st 2009 20:57
Bees seem to be disappearing. Maybe because they are running away from home. Swarms are being reported in oddball places, and the numbers are astonishing. They seem to be taking a vacation away from their conventional hives and landing in cities, among other places.

Some experts think this is a good sign. They seem to be going back to nature. Read more
