The Natural Order - February 2008

The Cost Of Ecology

February 25th 2008 17:43
Years ago when I was an avid herpetologist, I had a variety of reptiles and amphibians. I found that breeding them is fairly easy and the success rate is high with today's technology and know-how.

Most animals come with laws that vary by state or location. Tiger Salamanders and all salamanders of the genus Ambystoma are protected in my state. This status applies to ALL Ambystoma or mole salamanders, including the spotted which is abundant. I argued this point with a few state DEC officers at reptile shows. I think it's ridiculous because it is not like if you buy Tiger Salamanders you are getting them fron NYS, nor disrupting the protected LI species.

This brings us to another point of having to re-route a road because of a colony of rare newts. Of course it will cost a lot more than planned. Seems ashame that you can't elevate the road or move the newts to another environment down the road that would cost less to build.

The Funny Side Of Nature

February 16th 2008 17:15
(Note:The Get Fuzzy link will cease to exist in a few days. You can get the daily comic at comics.com, click on Get Fuzzy!)

If you are aware of the adventures of Bucky Katt you know that he hopes for cats to dominate the world using dogs as a tool and humans as ATMs! Here's just one of his many adventures in Get Fuzzy. So what does Bucky have to do with this story? His wishes are coming to fruition!

It seems that throughout the world there are ever increasing colonies of feral cats. The feral problem started with humans releasing unwanted litters into the wild. The cats survive and become wild and are susceptible to disease. This problem was caused by man and it becomes more dangerous when people start feeding or leaving food and trash unprotected near these wild colonies.

Here is someone who learned a lesson the hard way. His brilliant wife compared the cat to a human drug dealer!

Your next health kick is going-back-to-nature-in-a-pri mitive-way. I'm sure that many will eat this up. After all it is made by famous chefs who travel the world to find grasses and herbs.

What do you suppose Peta will do when it finds that 'wild bird's eggs' are exotic songbirds?

Blaming Global Warming...AGAIN!

February 10th 2008 22:39
Conservations create problems then try to blame the outcome on some natural phenomenum. Trying to preserve the tigers' habitat so that the population can increase may run into a conflict to the quick-breeding human race. So when skirmishes increase blame it on global warming. Human population increases, tiger population increases, blame it on global warming but blame it on the humans.

The polar icecaps are melting! Oh the horror and inhumanity. We worry about the polar bear and their habitat. Never worry because polar bears take full advantage of stupid man!

Biofuels Are The Answer...NOT!

February 9th 2008 23:15
Biofuels may be great for the environment, but they are a greenhouse threat. In the long run, biofuels may be more of a danger than a savior to the environment. So it seems to be anyways.

But we will always have the triple 'save your butt' talk that results in a yes-no-maybe conclusion. Check this quote out
