Here's a list of allegedly extinct animals. From the same site we can use this bit of wisdom: Extinction is a natural feature of evolution because for some species to succeed, others must fail.
Times have changed since I was a Boy Scout. Perhaps a tent isn't the best protection against the fury of nature. Bear attacks are more common and nature seems to carry a wide range of diseases. Forget the diseases that are carried by mosquitoes which keep improving every couple of years. The ticks, the flies and the other creepy crawlies are rather tame nowadays.
Then don't get me started on the idiots who want to keep armadillos as pets! From article:
Armadillos, for example, if not properly quarantined, can transmit plague, tuberculosis and leprosy. If released into the wild, exotic pets can wreak havoc on local plants and animals. Lastly, exotics can sometimes turn on their owners or others, causing serious injury or death.
Wild armadillos I was shocked to learn can carry leprosy! They are also spreading in unlikely places like here. Check out a blast from the past. Although they blame immigrants, leprosy is already an epidemic in certain states in the USA.
If man is at fault, it is because of strict conservation laws. It is also the fact that man continues to reproduce. Spare me the "We are invading their space" issue because animals can adapt and must be controlled. Some think the alligator was never really endangered and thanks to this, you get more of this!
Much of all these problems are also caused by those who observe and feed nature and get too close to animals whose trust you have gained. Animals view you as a food source or enemy and will react accordingly. Commune with nature? Have a beer on the hammock in the backyard and mark your territory!
Paying attention to detail is what I do. Sometimes things that may seem insignificant may be worth checking and researching. We've all heard about the bees and my theory on their decline. Perhaps bees are migrating to diverse places...for now!
Crime statistics are fascinating and amusing. They actually cover-up the facts. An example would be in my city where if crime drops in HIGH crime areas then crime is down. This doesn't consider the fact that crime is rising in areas of low crime. Same principle may apply to honey bees
Who cares who they are. The brilliance of this comment makes me wonder if people are reading ALL my posts, or like old people become selective in what they argue.
The comment from my last post and my response in paranthesis:
I always find these climate sceptics fascinating. (I am not a climate skeptic. I believe that we are going through a global warming. My skepticism lies in what some say is MAN'S fault
Again Global Warming is blamed for more woes. Too many figures are being used to exaggerate a natural phenomenon. Take this UN dribble. Read the first line: Human activities are wiping out three animal or plant species every hour and the world must do more to slow the worst spate of extinctions since the dinosaurs by 2010, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
If we wiped out 3 animal or plant species every hour life on earth would be extinct in a year or so. We tend to overlook this, this, this, and I could go on. Never fear because MAN will be the culprit of species becoming extinct. Again I'm skeptical of the Dodo!
Global Warming threatens peanuts and potatoes. There are better and healthier foods, folks. In the end paragraph: Other studies have found that plants prove more resilient in the face of climate change than anticipated, so further field experiments will be needed to determine if this gloomy prognosis is correct.
We often try to preserve and conserve to save the environment for various species that can probably adapt rather well. Yet if it is an ugly and dangerous species we then are allowed to destroy them into extinction. This is the case of the rattlesnake that serves as a big money-drawing tourist trap that entertains while butchering thousands of these rodent hunting predators.
If man was to truly design the perfect mouse trap it would have to take the blueprints from the snake. Snakes are designed to hunt their prey in silence and stealth and are efficient killers. The rattlers' prey is the rodent. Rodents can destroy man's food supply. Without a major predator such as the rattler, rodents can overpopulate and invade man's food chain in the form of crops and grains. They also spread disease
When animals have no real natural enemies, become accustomed to man, and can breed and overpopulate at will, danger comes knocking at our front doors. These may finally become apparent when the cute, furry, cuddly creatures tend to attack us. By doing so they also tend to spread diseases that otherwise would be rare.
Take this odd case of when squirrels attack! Yes folks, squirrels can carry and spread rabies like raccoons and bats. When an animal attacks like this one did, there is truly something that is amiss
Let me put this in layman's terms...If a species is released in an unnatural environment, it will either be quickly eliminated or propagate and overpopulate. Over the years many unnatural species have been released or escaped in our environments. Why is there an established parrot colony here and here?
People are going to find this hard to believe, but I was aware of Global Warming since the 70s at least. Although I had no name for it and I was just a kid. I lived in climates where lizards and other reptiles were common and back in the 60s in a Peterson Field Guide, I found the closest lizard to my area reached somewhere in Central Pennsylvania. This was the five-lined skink.
Central Park has a Conservacy that manages the park. Turtles are always a common sight in the park, especially near Tutle Pond. Turtle Pond was designed to help turtles lay their eggs complete with an island and sandy spots. Don't you just love Tourist Traps, er, ah, I mean Tourist ATTRACTIONS?!!!
Nothing is more frustrating than when you write a great blog and it doesn't go through, for whatever reson. Therefore I will give links and arguements.
There is new(or old) information on the honeybee decline. It seems like the study has been going on since 2000. It was started at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. They are perhaps the bee authority
A pet peeve I have is why people pay for our essential water. Dasani was busted for being Municipal tap water. Is tap water so bad that we believe it will kill us? Yet we bathe, brew coffee, make soups, cook pasta, etc., with it
I learned a lot from the birds. I learned that feeding them to attract them can get rather pricey. I started feeding birds with less than $5 a week, but as the bird population at the feeders grew it got up to over $100 before I was forced to quit. I learned much about bird habits and their unique adaptability and how resourceful birds really are. I read many books and literatures about feeding birds and encountered habits that aren't written anywhere. For instance, while cupping my hands under a fountain to wash my face, a chickadee lands on my palm takes a drink and flies off. All at a lightning speed and even I had no time to react.
When food is abundant, birds become relaxed. Even the natural pecking order is ignored and squirmishes are far and in between among the species. After all there is enough for everybody. Caution is thrown to the wind, even when warning cries are shouted. This allows the equalizer to establish a natural order even if for a short time. The equalizer is the predator
I still have a hard time trying to relize why man feels that he must 'save' the animals that lose their way and go astray. Perhaps they have not learned their survival skills well, and therefore are destined for death. We do it with whales, dolphins, etc., and end up making a 'feel-good' movie about it.
Let me be clear...I think the Dodo is a hoax! Instead of thinking about man's impact, we should learn why stupidity will render you extinct. Man may have extincted some stupid looking whatever, but yet it is man's stupidity that will lead to his demise! I don't believe that nature has left a species SO TRUSTING and STUPID that it took an omnipotent man to destroy it. When man killed the first one, it is nature that makes the rest weary of man. Yet they were still trusting. That is pure dribble to anyone who truly understands the natural order of things.
In the 70s I studied about these seal colonies in the Galapagos Islands where on one side they were hunted by man hundreds of years earlier and still FEARED man. On the other side of that same island, where man had never hunted them, they did not fear man. To those who don't understand, instincts are more powerful than emotions. Humans are overpowered by their emotions that they tend to project on animals
So what do I think is declining the honeybee population? My THEORY is based on perhaps the widespread of the Killer Bees! I live in a mostly cold, harsh, winter climate and Killer Bees have established a few colonies here. First we must separate facts from fiction about Killer Bees. Some of the things I have heard on nature shows is that Africanized bees tend to raid, kill and takeover the honeybees hives
