The Natural Order - by signals

Suicidal Tendancies

October 12th 2008 14:01
Suicide is always a tragedy that leaves a stigma on those left behind. Discussions on the topic are usually very touchy in nature. At one time it was fairly rare(although suicide was usually kept silenced by the families), today it is fairly common and talked about. We have physicians discussing aiding patients with suicide, whether it is moral or merciful, etc., yet we can't slow it down.

Teen suicide, and their increasing numbers, seem to be an epidemic in all generations. It is during adolescence that we try to find who we are and what are our identities in life. Teens may be on top of the list, but noone is immune. Something I studied back in college psychology was that anyone determined to die, will.

In my community, many have jumped off bridges unto interstates. Others have jumped over shopping mall railings to their deaths to the floor below. Since more and more people are committing suicide in public areas, some communities aretrying to suicide-proof these high suicide areas. It is happening where I live.

It is also happening in large cities. The final cost of these projects will no doubt cost the taxpayer. There are NO guarantees that they will work.

I think they are more like a Wet Floor sign to deflect liability!

Dangerous Pets

October 6th 2008 19:04
In my lifetime I've owned a variety of exotic pets. Many successful and many not so. My first exotic pet was a turtle, that back in my days were kept in deplorable conditions. A salmonella outbreak eventually stopped their sales in pet shops.

I've had wild birds, exotic mammals, reptiles and amphibians. I don't really count fish but I've had them, too. I did wash my hands often anytime I came in contact with these pets or their cages.

My opinion today is that the exotic pet trade has gotten out of hand. This includes hamsters and gerbils. Although this article refers to children under 5, it should serve as a warning about keeping these exotic pets. Take note about petting zoos, too.

If you plan to keep an exotic pet, research before you buy. Many people entering the exotic pet trade are going in without much knowledge, and most pet shop owners are in it for the sale. This means they lack the knowledge, too. These animals can spread germs and bacteria, and other airborne diseases.

Always wash after handling the animal or anything in the cage. Keep its environment clean. Don't keep animals near kitchens or dining areas.

Environmental DIM Wits

October 5th 2008 15:48
I still feel like I'm repeating myself at times. I did mention the new flourescent bulbs that are suppose to help the environment. I told you they were more of a disaster to the environment because of the mercury content.

Well science just caught up to the obvious. I hope you're glad that you are doing your part for the environment by buying this $3 wonder bulb. Now see how much it will cost to get rid of this 'eco-friendly' disaster that might prove more costly than plastic at landfills.

Animal Husbandry...a Dubai Disaster

September 27th 2008 00:36
When putting various species together for display purposes, one must consider the compatibility of said species. Apparently, some rich bureaucrat developer in Dubai doesn't get it!

This says it all: ...concentration of such a large number of sharks in a small space has led to what some might have considered predictable problems for the Dubai Mall's management

The Pants In The House

September 26th 2008 23:57
I'm sure guys think that they wear the pants in the relationship. In the outside world, perhaps it is a man's world. But it is the women that make the decisions where you live!

Airborne Killers

September 15th 2008 22:06
I've always been fascinated with raptors otherwise known as birds of prey. They are the perfect killing machine from the air. Sharks are #1 in the water. Raptors have great eyesight and can see even the smallest prey from at least a mile away.

When I fed the birds, raptor strikes were a welcomed sight. Birds get too laxed at feeders and raptors tend to keep them on their toes as is the way of nature. Birds of prey are all fascinating. They come in all sizes, operate at all hours, are adaptable to hunt in their environment, are very misunderstood and fascinating at the same time, and I could go on

Shark Attacks

September 8th 2008 17:17
Shark attacks are on the increase especially in Florida. Here are attack statistics both by states and worldwide. This site is loaded with useful info including how to reduce your risk of getting attacked.

Sharks usually attack surfers because they resemble their favorite delicacy, the seal. Sharks really are repulsed by the taste of man and discontinue after the first bite. This is not to say that that first bite can't be fatal, and if there is a school of sharks...well you get the picture! Even without fatalities, sharks and surfers don't mix

The Zoo Problem

September 8th 2008 16:46
Try though they might, zoos can't really imitate an animal's natural environment. Most animals encompass large territories of a few acres to many miles. Zoos create a type of psychological problems, especially among the larger mammals such as elephants and bears. It is noticeable when the animal is in one spot and sways its body or neck from side-to-side. Now here is a problem that goes with the unatural zoo environment.

Polar bears that live in the artic are in an unnatural environment when air temperatures exceed their expectations. Add to the fact that daylight-night ratio is compromised, the water isn't clean, hibernation depletion, etc., and you have a true problem created by man

It seems that Louisiana can't catch a break. Ike may prove a storm worse than Katrina.

Just For Fun

I'm going to stop preaching about nature, global warming, and anything I talk about on this blog, to give sites, resources, and tools that will be useful to almost everyone. Enjoy!

I love this quote
