The questioning mind - by Milly

The most influential person in history...who would you choose?

November 18th 2006 02:49
I have just completed a world history subject and at the end of it, my friend asked me who the most influential people have been. I thought about it and finally concluded that there are just too many to count. I want to know who you believe has made the most difference on the third rock from the sun.

I narrowed it down to these people, but couldn't choose between them:

Muhammad (570 - 630ce) - who established Islam

Jesus - Christian prophet

Ghengis Khan (or Chinggis) - united Mongolia in the 13th century and established an empire

Isaac Newton (16th century) - developed the laws of gravity during The Scientific Revolution

Who else can you think of that has made a significant contribution? There were all of the inventors, the tyrants (negative contributions), the explorers, etc. Einstein was voted the man of the century. Do you agree with this award?

Milly,

Jesus, the son of God, not just a prophet.

Mother Theresa

Einstein - I agree.

Bill Gates

little Johnny Howard

Inventor of Television, Internet conceiver, inventor of the airoplane, discoverer of electricity, Christian Barnard, DNA discoverers, developer of germ theory, the list is endless and let's not overlook the discoverers of x-rays and antibiotics. I can see I need to do some more research here.

That's just for starters, anyway.

ive always liked this question, i gotta say i find it really hard to narrow it down to one person. a few people i think the world wouldnt be the same without are:

abraham: for fathering the 3 main monotheistic religions.
socrates/aristotle: for their legacy of philosophical thought that remains prominent today.
stephen hawking: for proving the big bang theory.
benjamin franklin/da vinci: for their inventions.
flemming: for penicillin.
alexander the great: for his empire.
romulus and remus (ficticious but still cool).
Marx: for his theories.
adam smith: " ' "
Gandi: defeat of the british armies.
and jesus, mohammed, siddhartha, zoraster and st paul.

wow, i failed miserably to come up with just one. ahh well, such is life.

Going to also go with Jesus Christ on this one too, many personal and theological reasons.

Gutenberg, the guy that invented the printing press also awesome.

Hey Josh,

When was that? Was that during the enlightenment? Or was it before then? I remember learning about Martin Luther and how he published his criticisms of the Roman Catholic Church. He was around at the time of the Reformation and all that, so it must have been earlier.

Chris Barnard was the first man to perform a heart transplant if my memory serves me well!

I have to agree that Jesus would be the number one!!

If my grandmother had been able to be known by many I reckon she would be one of the most influential people in history too! An angel walking the earth she was!

sorry about the very belated reply, i kinda forgot how to return to your blog. siddhartha was the real name of buddha...eg, his name as a prince or brahman before he went on his journeys. st paul was arguably the most influential writer in the new testament, he brought christianity to huge amounts of people, was the catalyst for the protestant reformation and contributed hugely to principles of doctrine in the catholic church.
