The malunggay leaves which contain phosphorus, calcium and iron are commonly eaten as vegetable either cooked with chicken, pork, fish or shrimp or eaten fresh as salad.
Malunggay contains more calcium and Vitamin A, B, and C than other leafy vegetables. Nutrition experts say that 200 grams of fresh malunggay leaves is as nutritious as four eggs and two grams of milk. Malunggay has more niacin, thiamine, phosphorus and ascorbic acid, too, than any other vegetable. Moreover, it has an iron compound that helps prevent anemia.
The leaves eases digestion, constipation, hysteria and flatulence ( gas formation in the alimentary canal). Methiamine, an amino acid found in leaves, young pods and seeds is used to treat a certain liver disease.
