The Lunchbox: Revisited
October 17th 2011 18:15
How many of you are reading this at lunch or break time? (Even if you aren't, keep reading) You maybe packed a sandwich or some chips or anything--in a plastic bag. These convenient little, resealable packages allow us to carry just about anything, but they come at a price. Plastic contributes to an ever-increasing portion of disposable waste. Plastic is also one of the most permanent substances that a consumer throws away. But what can you do?
Solution #1:
Use Tupperware-type containers. Many manufacturers of plastic bags now make cheap reusable containers that are even microwave/dishwasher safe. However, they still have a limited lifespan.
Solution #2:
Glassware. Glass has been an enduring solution to many food distribution products, so why not let it work for your lunch? The plastic/rubber tops usually last much, much longer than Tupperware or other plastic storage.
Solution #3:
Be a neighbor. Share a meal between multiple people or take advantage of a kitchen to make food/meals in bulk.
Simple steps to a greener lunch. And I'm not going to rant about organic foods or how much money you can save by bringing your own lunch to work because you could probably read that in the paper on a weekly basis. But try these easy fixes and work them into your habits and you'll be amazed at how much less trash you have during the day.
