The loss...

February 15th 2008 13:40
...of Paul's Mother was still a shock, she left this world peacefully around 2am this morning, Paul called to tell me around 3am and funny how things work out as I was stirring and heard the phone ring only once, I knew.
All the arrangements were prearranged by his deceased father, all this death, decease and passing; odd the words we chose.
Being gay and in our 50's, Paul and I have already felt the loss of literally dozens of our closest friends in the 80's and 90's from HIV. We were reading obits in our 20's, something that we should still not be doing with our contempories, but you learn to cope, to learn that death is often a welcome respite to the suffering and sick. Your grieving becomes less selfish and you realize the joy that particuliar person uniquely brought to this planet. That's when you learn to rejoice life; your living and their passing. We have so much fear and morbidity around death and the dying.

Virginia, Paul's Mom, died a peaceful death surrounded by her family and well taken care of by hospice. A hospice the family cannot say praise enough for the compassionate treatment she lovingly received. She is with her husband of over 60 years now and I am sure the party didn't start till the "character" arrived.
Paul is alright, he has his sister and she has him. How much you prepare you still do not realize the depth of what it means to never be able to see this person alive again, but we are blessed with memories and with love and each other. Good night Virginia, we love you.
