The Longing

The Longing…………
They spoke a language
Unknown to me.
Words which I had once
Sought to understand now fell
Lifeless, turning inward
Embracing the disquiet
Still, insistent, urgent
Sensing a need, welling
Deep and dark and constant.
Disconnected from an essence which once
Had stirred it into being
A long insistent shadow of self
Burned into the deepest memory
Of desire to be as one with others
And yet unable
To quiet the voice within
Endlessly speaking the words
With no meaning.
Searching for belonging
In places dark and lifeless
Looking for something
which cannot be found.
