The Lesson

I really can't explain it, but I have a special place in my heart for LUV. Ironically, LUV is the stock exchange ticker for Southwest Airlines. Their brass, or wings, have a heart in the center that distinguishes them. I tend to refer to them as Sweetheart Airlines.
I may have spoke about SW's surprise bid on Frontier Airlines, way outbidding Republic in their bid. But the US Airways curse has actually come back to bite WN's bid as their may be a pilot seniority concerns that brought it to a screeching halt. Southwest's goal, so it seems, was to dominate the Denver hub alongside with United.
Apparently airline bankruptcy bids aren't an auction and a judge can award the outcome to the lower bidder by over $60 million! Republic won the bid for Frontier. You know Southwest has taken a blow on this one. Still, I believe that if US Airways and United really do merger, all others will be a far second fiddle at this airport. This move by WN seems like the failed US attempt to take over Delta as it came out of bankruptcy. In return Delta won a bid to merge with Northwest.
Friends who work for airlines seem to believe, off record, that there will be only one airline in the USA...maybe one national and one international. Most Nations have one National airlines for the most part. I did say MOST, in case you find contradiction.
With passengers count dropping in airline travel airlines need to survive. I find it funny when the article says:
The two top airlines serving Phoenix -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and US Airways (NYSE: LCC) -- saw their passengers counts drop during the first five months of 2009 compared with 2008. But Southwest and US Airways passenger losses were not as steep as some other carriers.
Imagine that? I thought that these two were a couple of big rivals? Yet it almost looks like they feed off each other. But that is not the case, but is proof that any figures can be twisted.
The pudding is always in the end:
Southwest served the most passengers overall, followed by American. US Airways was fifth.
Southwest WiNs on all fronts. Although it saw a lesser drop than other airlines, US may have been hurt by the decline in passengers. If I were to give an overview in my area, Delta's passengers have increased since the merger with Northwest. US Air seems to be more 'streamlined' as the flights are more coordinated.
Disclaimer: Most of these are just my views and may be flawed. They're my observation from an airport and the headlines. And a secret society
! I'm an avid aviation freak.
