The draft is done, let the games begin!

February 26th 2009 10:41
Well the League of Leagues is finally on the way.

After a summer of talking, debating, and lengthy email in inordinate detail on what would be the rules (still hurting the "bad reputation" rule has missed out) the draft went away last Wednesday and finally the six teams are ready for battle.

The draft night went (surprisingly) off without a hitch. We laughed, we cried about the random format of the picks (okay that just me), we made fun of Chris believing Vanilla Ice was still number one on the charts, but we finally had our squads.

Eveyone got some great picks, some fantastic steals, and some teams they are just hoping will do something this season, but how did everyone shape up?

The teams are all going through pre-season competition so far, and with AFL and NRL going through their trial/NAB Cup matches, and Australia getting ready to take on the Proteas in their Test series, we shall soon see which teams will rise to the challenge, and which will float to the shallow end of the dream pool.

Let the games begin!

League of Leagues Rules

February 9th 2009 07:06
The competition involves people owning teams throughout a number of different sporting competitions. The more games your teams win, the more likely you are to win each fortnight.
Owners go head-to-head in fortnightly contests. For each sport, the owner whose teams have won the most matches over the past fortnight gets a point. The winner of the fortnight is the owner who gets the most points.

At present the first sports will be AFL, NRL, EPL, Major League Baseball and NBA. There will also be individual competitions for AFL Goalkickers (organized by most goals scored) and Australian international cricketers (1pt/run, 30pt/wicket, 8pt/catch). This makes each fortnight a best of seven contest.
Here’s a mock of how a fortnight’s scoring might go:

All leagues will be drafted through a MEGAdraft, in which people pick all teams they are required to have in the one draft. There will be a total of 22 teams/players picked by each owner. Owners can either put forward a full list of which teams they want in order or draft pick-by-pick (which would be better but a bit more work).

Teams can be traded at any time and be traded for teams in other leagues, but you need to have the correct amount of teams in each league at the start of each fortnight.
New sports will be added as the league develops. We’ll definitely add the NFL and A-League when they restart in August or September.

When a team is drafted it is drafted to a two-year contract. At the end of each year you can only keep one team from each league and can’t keep a team if it’s at the end of its ‘contract’ – any team at the end of its contract re-enters the draft.

From time to time there will be ‘special competitions’. These will include for the Brownlow Medal and Norm Smith – these will be drafted the week before the game, with the person who correctly picks the winner getting an extra ‘win’. Other examples could be State of Origin rugby league, AFL and NRL grand finals (pick results/scores) and Melbourne Cup etc. Any other ideas are also up for debate – just let me know.
