The Health Scare
July 23rd 2009 01:06
Welcome, one and all to The New Leftist! I want to open this blog with a post on a subject that is very important to me, and that is health care reform. I think we've all heard the numbers as to how many are uninsured and the percentage of industry dollars going to profits, etc. But I want to open this post with a more ethical question: should we consider health care in the 21st century a right or a privilege?
I would submit to you, that access to health care is indeed a right a la the rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Yet many in the conservative camp disagree. I'd like to hear what you think.

"Health care is not a right. If it were, the government would not be able to deny it to any person, which President Obama himself admitted would be the case if it passed, because rights are inalienable. If you're old, you may get a pain pill instead of a bypass. The ability to ACCESS health care is a right, just as the ability to pursue happiness is a right, but there is no guarantee of outcome."
Any thoughts?
