"The Fox And The Hound":
Might Contain Spoilers.
The Fox And The Hound is an animated movie that was produced in 1981 . It is based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix. This film was distributed by The Walt Disney Company. Like many films involving Disney, especially ones that are adapted from stories that are already written, it has very little accuracy, However, the screenplay of this film wasn't 110% transformed into a soft and sheltered story. It also has the songs woven into the rest of the film so there aren't any interruptions. (of course the more noticeable songs are the one about When You're The Best Of Friends, and the one about Tod and Vixie).
It appears that the setting of this story is around the turn of the century (the beginning of the 20th century) based on the appearance of the cars and the wiring. Sadly this movie was not produced in Widescreen.
The book is about a group of hunters (a human hunter and dogs) that are tracking down a fox. They never became friends and one of dogs in Chief's role (not sure if he was named Chief in the book but I think he was) dies.
The movie adaptation shows all the credits in the opening credits. It shows a peaceful setting that is soon disrupted by Amos Slade and Chief who are routinely chasing and shooting foxes. And then they find a mother fox who abandons her baby on a farm. She runs away to distract the hunters from the young fox and a gun goes off. It is obvious that she has been shot and killed. With the help of birds who pointed the farmer in the direction of the location of the baby fox, the farmer ends up raising him and she names him Tod.
Amos slade gets a puppy (most likely to replace Chief) who is named Copper. Tod and Copper are neighbors and soon become friends.
Mr. Slade does not like Copper leaving the yard and of course he would never like Tod who is a fox to be onto his property. He ties Copper to a leash and when Tod went too close to Chief, he gets chased by chief which goes through a chicken house. Mr. Slade also thinks Tod is going to eat his chickens. Although Amos can be very hostile, Ms. Tweed does not take any harrassment from him.
One of the neighbors is a farmer, The other one is a hunter. The two are enemies because of this and this also means that it is impossible for Tod and Copper to be friends. And of course Copper is raised to hunt foxes. A train almost kills Chief, which causes Copper and Amos to hunt Tod in particular more than ever. They even break the law by hunting onto a wildlife reserve. Tod has to live there on his 1st birthday. He makes a few more friends. One of them is a porcupine that sounds like Piglet. and an enemy (but not a deadly enemy) is a badger. He can't stay with the porcupine because he accidentally hurts Tod. And then he meets Vixie and then the hunters are after both of them. The hunt centers on Tod once again and then a bear shows up and is after anything that it sees. Tod ends up saving all of their lives. The log that Tod and The Bear are on collapes and it is most likely that the bear died. Tod is knocked unconsious and can't get up at first. He has a gun pointed at him but Copper gets in front of Tod. He begs Amos to give up and he does, and for a second almost appears to realize that Tod is a hero, not a pest, and that Tod and Copper became friends when they are younger. Tod and Copper are not seen together again in the movie, but The Wildlife Reserve is not far from both The Farm and Amos Slade's house, Tod's new home can easily view their houses. The two neighbors work together since Chief has a hurt leg, and now Amos has a hurt leg.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies. It does not fit the usual description of a Disney movie. I like the movie because of the story line, and also the music. The music was produced by Buddy Baker and Walter Sheets. The type of music matches Dean Elliott's style of music. A "1 1/2" sequel was made many years later, but it is not as good and also fits the description of a typical Disney movie. I also think that this movie (not the book, the movie) has a very improtant moral. It is how some friendships develop. And then something happens that causes the friendship to weaken. I always call any communication problems between friends that cause arguments that seem easy yet impossible to resolve (or the arguments just don't get resolved) as A Fox & Hound Type Of Friendship.
You should get this film. It is probably "Locked In The Disney Vault For 10 More Years" or whatever they call it, but you can probably find previous releases of the original The Fox And The Hound movie. It is also going to be fun to comapre the book with the movie.
