Two Pains in the Neck

February 2nd 2012 20:19
The world of sport is focused on two literal pains in the neck which may have long term repercussions for two players, two franchises and two sports.

The neck injuries of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby are the talk of pro football and hockey fans respectively. Both are serious enough that neither man is playing at the moment and may never play again.

If they can't, both the Colts and Penguins will have to find replacements for the most important players on their teams. And the National Football and Hockey Leagues will have to find someone else to become the face of their leagues.

Manning's neck injury has been well known for months. He has had three surgeries on it in the last 19 months. The final one was a fusion performed on September 8. The injury forced him to sit out the entire 2011 season and Indianapolis finished 2-14. There is talk that the Colts may release him in the off season and draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to take his place.

The bigger question is not whether Manning will play for the Colts, but whether he will play again. Doctors have not cleared him to play yet and there is no guarantee that the nerves in his neck which are causing the problem will regenerate.

As, for Crosby his injury was not diagnosed until recently. For two years he has been suffering from injuries that caused concussion like symptoms. The problem was thought to be post concussion syndrome, but doctors have since diagnosed it as a soft tissue neck injury that can be treated.

Crosby has begun getting treatment for his injury, but there is still no timetable for his return. The all-star says that he will not take to the ice until he is completely healthy.

As for the leagues in which they play in the NFL does not need Manning as much as the NHL does Crosby. Though both leagues will survive and move on the NFL is more about teams than stars. The NHL is team oriented also, but more fans tune in nationally to see stars than teams.

Having said this it is more important for Manning and Crosby to get healthy than it is for them to play again. Fans would like to see them perform again, but if they can not both have accomplished everything that an athlete can in their sport.

But one can be sure that these are two pains in the neck that the NFL and NHL want to go away.

What is a Dunk?

January 31st 2012 18:16
A lot of noise is being made over Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffins dunk on Kendrick Perkins of Oklahoma City. It was good, but my question is, 'What is a dunk?' What is the difference between actually dunking and getting the ball in the basket?

I think a dunk is when a player stuffs the ball into the hoop and his hand actually goes inside the rim. If the hand comes off of the ball before it goes into the rim then it is not a dunk. Even if his hand touches the rim on follow through it is not a dunk to me if he loses the ball first.

In my humble opinion, I think that Griffin's basket was great, but not a dunk. Sure, he covered a lot of ground from his leap to the basket. But the ball is clearly coming out of his hand on the way down. I would almost call it a vicious hook shot in which he hit the rim on the way down.

Of course, the dunk is already on Youtube and being hailed by the talking heads as one of the best. This is the age we live in. But I wouldn't even put it in Griffin's top ten.

To me a dunk is what Philadelphia 76er legend Julius 'Dr. J' Erving did to the Lakers Michael Cooper. A one handed windmill where his whole hand damn near tore down the rim. Or the Bulls Michael Jordan going baseline on the Knicks Patrick Ewing. Not to mention the Knicks John Starks left handed stuff on Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Bill Walton of the Blazers threw one down on Kareem in the 1977 playoffs as well.

Call me old school. I am. But to me a dunk has to finish with the hand in the rim before the ball is released.

That's what a dunk is to me.

Will The Heat Get it Done?

December 15th 2011 19:57
Now that we know there will be an NBA season, the big question as it was last season is 'Will the Miami Heat get it done?'.

Last season, the Heat had put together the so-called 'Dream Team' of forward Lebron James, guard Dwayne Wade and center Chris Bosh. James had come from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Bosh the Toronto Raptors. Immediately they proclaimed themselves the team to beat and predicted a string of championships.

This caused resentment among many fans as the only person in the group with a championship ring is Wade. He won it back in 2006. James had been to the Finals with the Cavaliers in 2007 and was on the losing side to the San Antonio Spurs. Bosh had never been to a championship final.

The Heat won the Eastern Conference, but lost in the Finals to the Dallas Mavericks in six games. So talk of a dynasty had to be tempered for a year.

Now, we get to 2011-12 and the Heat will try again. The team added 10 year NBA veteran Shane Battier to play defense and help out Bosh on the boards. Besides that Miami is basically the team that Erik Spoelstra coached last season.

The Heats main competition in the East will be the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic. The Celtics bring back their aging Big Three of guard Ray Allen, forward Paul Pierce and center Kevin Garnett. The Celtics signed forward Jeff Green to a long term contract. Point guard Rajon Rondo is being shopped around for trade.

The Magic brings back center Dwight Howard despite the fact that the big man has put on the trade block as well. Howard has said many times that he does not know if he wants to stay in Orlando, but it looks like this year he will.

In the West, Dallas is a year older and so are the Lakers. San Antonio has to hope that forward Tim Duncan has something left in the tank. Oklahoma City made a run last season and could make the Finals this season.

But the truth is, whether we like it or not, the title is there for the Heat.

It's there's to win or lose.

Baseball: Trying to Make it To the Pros

December 8th 2011 03:29
My nephew played baseball growing up and when he saw what shortstop Jose Reyes got for signing with the Miami Marlins sent me a text. It said, ‘Reyes signed for 106. Man I blew it.’

Miami Heat forward Lebron James needs to take a page from former Los Angeles Lakers hall of fame guard Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson. James and the Heat are coming off of a season in which they proclaimed themselves the best team in the National Basketball Association then lost in the Finals to the Dallas Mavericks. James did not produce when it counted in the Finals and had to watch Dirk Nowitzki take home the championship hardware.

Blondes v. Brunettes

December 6th 2011 20:56
About a month ago I attended a powder puff charity football game between the Blondes and Brunettes in which over $120,000 was raised for Alzheimer's research. I had a vested interest in it, because my nephew's girlfriend was playing(her mom has the disease), he coached the team and I gave him the playbook.
