The First Post of 'Life in Brisbane'

June 10th 2008 08:12
My name is Sasha, I live in Brisbane although I'm originally from New Zealand. How about you?

I've lived in Brisbane for two and a half years and am yet to explore all of it. In fact, I've barely scratched the surface of this broad, sunny city and I'm a little ashamed of myself.

This blog is intended to motivate me to get outside the house and see more of this place I live in. As a bonus, you get to see my photos, hear about the experiences I have, figure out where you'd want to go if you came here, suggest places for me to check out, and comment.

Some of the recent experiences that I'm thinking of writing about include:

Seeing The Phantom of the Opera at QPAC
Ice-skating in Archerfield/Acacia Ridge
Eating at the Three Monkey's Cafe in West End
Going to the Sunday markets at Woodridge
Walking around the lake at Forest Lake

I've heard great things about Brisbane -- what made you choose it instead of Sydney or Melbourne?

I moved here mostly because I have family here and it's a bit more familiar to me than Sydney. I've never been to Melbourne but some of the things I've heard about sometimes make me wish I had moved there instead. The University of Queensland was also offering a degree that I couldn't do in Melbourne or Sydney so that influenced my decision as well

Hi Sasha
I came to Sydney from Brisbane originally long time back, Brisbane has changed a lot since. Great restaurants and entertainment and life style. It is up there now as a very modern city. But still has that Queensland charm others do not have.

It's interesting that you say Brisbane has become more modern... I've had other people tell me that Brisbane is more lifeless and decrepit now than it was in the '80s. Does it depend on what you're looking for in a city I wonder?

My first experience of Brisbane was in 1997 but I was 12 years old and only saw Brisbane's best face then. I do think that the 'Queensland charm' is much more obvious in its smaller towns though - I was in Esk recently and it was lovely

Well i worked in radio there some time back and it was not so much a on the go city as now days. Brisbane has had a lot of great comments from people overseas now days. They have made use of the waterfront so well. When i was there the night life was small..i used to go to a basement cafe in the Valley, drink wine and listen to spanish guitar. I know Esk quite well ! very charming rural area. Nestled beneath the mountains.
Good old pubs and antique places etc .

Hi Trevar,

I agree, the waterfront and South Bank are excellent. I love going to the Sunday markets at South Bank.

Brisbane's night life (what I've seen of it so far) has been a little off-putting though. It may be much bigger and more lively than previously but I think Fortitude Valley, in particular, suffers a little from its own success? There've been too many people in drunken crowds every Friday/Saturday night I've been out for my taste.

Isn't the old hotel with all the antiques in Esk just fantastic? I think I actually got lost in there

Yes its terrific. would have been a good old pub to stay at i guess. the place is wonderful and as you say one can get lost... you know one of the old pubs there in very old days was moved from elsewhere and brought on waggons in halves i think.. one hotel there, maybe it, not sure had huge number of rooms for travellers... Esk is home also of the Yowie.. have you seen the statue there- my brother in law grew up there and said when kids fishing they always felt something was watching them from the bush ... hguess i'll have to go soon..maybe catch you later on . pitch dark outside..and rainy ..all week

Ooh yes, I have indeed heard of the Yowie. Queensland has its own Bigfoot equivalent! I did think that the statue was in Kilkoy though? I'm not sure, because I haven't seen it...

Pitch dark and rainy? Where are you from Trevar? It sounds like my kind of place! I've been loving all the extra rain Brisbane has been getting lately

Haha... at the moment I'm enjoying being an unemployed bum (not at the expense of the Australia taxpayer, God forbid!). A month ago, I was a coal quality analyst - basically I spent all night creatively burning things .

Talk to you tomorrow Trevar, G'night
