The films to watch this year!

January 12th 2012 01:36
Category: No Category
I cannot remember being this excited for films coming out this year. There are some of my favourite superheros of all time getting another film this year and some truly interesting pieces of work that I am also excited about. I have a feeling that this is going to be a great year for films, and i can hardly wait.

The following is a list of films that I am very excited to see this year, they are in no particular order and I will provide a blurb to describe each one best as I can.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
This is a film adaptation to a dark comedy/horror book. Think of it in similar terms to Zombieland, but with one of our presidents.
Iron Sky
This is a Finnish movie centered around, you guessed it, Nazis. Not just any Nazis though, but Nazis from the Moon! I guess I missed something but it seems that the Scandinavian people have a strange obsession with the Nazis. Anyway, this film is about space Nazis coming down from the moon to invade Earth. Expect it to hit the same node as Dead Snow in terms of comedy and just over-all ridiculousness.
John Carter
It seems almost redundant to make this film, being that the books based around this film is the blueprint of all Sci-fi...everything. Despite that it looks stunning and being released at the time it is the lavish landscapes and over-the-top visuals will be done justice.
Prometheus
Being touted as a prequel to Alien it has director Ridley Scott back at the helm of horror/space horror films. The film looks very interesting and does indeed seem to follow the formula that Alien set up. The film looks scary and looks to place some big set-piece moments throught.
The Avengers
What more can be said about this film? It is Marvel studios biggest gambit and gamble, bringing all of their superheros together in one major feature. The film as basically been in the works since Iron-Man, and I can think of no other film coming out this year with this much build up behind it. It promises to be a great Blockbuster, and I am very excited for it.
The Dark Knight Rises
It's the Goddamn Batman! I am a huge Batman fan, so it is almost without saying that I am excited for this one. It is a little disappointing that it is both Bane and Cat-woman as the villains, as I care for others. However, this will be a thrilling conclusion to what as essentially become the reason I know who Christopher Nolan is. I am a little weary about the part three curse, but I still have great hopes for this one.
The Amazing Spider-man
As big of a Batman fan I am, I am just as big of a Spider-man fan. I love Spider-man, and I loved the other Spider-man films, so my hope is that this one will be just as good, if not better, than the last ones. I am very excited for this new interpretation and this being the third Superhero Blockbuster this year my hope is that it is not lost in the shuffle.
The Hobbit
Peter Jackson returns to Middle-Earth to give us a film adaptation to the widely successful children's book/fantasy novel. The only thing to say about this one is that it it will be everything that was great about the Lord of the Rings put to the story of The Hobbit.
The Raven
This looks to be a great horror/mystery film that takes place on the winter of Edgar Allen Poe's life where he has to solve the murders that reflect his own works of poetry. It looks to be very well put together and and exciting thriller.
Wreck it Ralph
The best way to describe this film is Toy Story meets Donkey Kong. The basic idea is that Ralph is tired of being seen as the bad guy for doing what he does best and so he travels to other nearby games. This seems right up my alley, and I am very excited about it; video-games and movies, a combination that I hope this time does not suck. I am excited, but very nervous about this one for the pure and simple fact that Hollywood does not always understand the video-game culture (more on this in a different post), epically when it comes to Disney.
Lincoln
This film is another book adaptation, this time about Lincoln's final months in office, called Team of Rivals . This film promises to be good with how many big names it has in it, and not in a New Year's Eve kind of way. The film is directed by Spielberg and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Abe Lincoln. This film promises to be a powerhouse of a film and will surely be an academy nominee.
Red Tails

A film Directed by George Lucas about the heroics and trials of the Tuskegee airmen. The film looks to be action oriented and give a heavy dose of plane acrobatics. My biggest worry is that many will not see this film because it is about African-American/black pilots and that most of the world may not necessarily relate to a distinctly American issue. Also, on the worrisome side the CGI looks good, but spread on like crust over apple pie. Despite those things I am still excited about this film and hope to see it.
World War Z
A film based on the Book written by Max Brooks and starring Brad Pitt. Essentially the dead have come back to life and the entire world is at war with them. The film seems to be an after-the fact film going through and talking to survivors in the wake of the war. I loved the book, and seeing it in film form seems only fitting. Again, this is going to be a slight horror/dark comedy film because of the source material, but, never the less, it looks to be a great film.

That is my list of most anticipated films for 2012, I hope that I can see them all. This year promises to be an exciting one, and I look forward to sitting down in those theater chairs and enjoying the show for a long time this year.
