Exoterics...Exoterics are the outer teachings, the hidden teachings, the teachings that are given to the outer circle of not-so-devoted-students or the general masses of public, passerbys or temporary students and are available to common people just like the ones that we often encounter in our daily lives in forms of boxes and separate boxes of religion.
While esoteric teachings were teachings that were only transmitted to the inner circles. Such was the ways masters-students apprenticeship have been done for over countless centuries, in the good intention to make sure that only the students that are ready to gain the teachings get the teachings. For the student, it requires intimacy with the master's teaching to have the esoteric imparted upon the student. Knowledge given to those who are not prepared for it would not only confuse or harm themselves, but may also harm other people surrounding that person. Also it is important to make sure some dangerous techniques or skills to be passed on to rightful and virtuous person who can live responsibly not mis-using the esoteric techniques or skills.
Almost every religion/spiritual tradition always have its exoteric and esoteric side. And if we observe and study the esoteric sides, we would find the connectedness and the oneness of the teachings from those various traditions, as if they were spoken out from one source. Indeed, there is no religion higher than truth, because truth itself is universal!, just like how the water is H2O is universal in this world. Gravity doesn't belong to any religion, so does truth and universal laws!
In the contrast, learning exoterism side of one or two or more religion/spiritual traditions and then comparing one to another would tend to disillusion the person to think that each path are incompatible to one another. Instead of seeing how learning other religion/spiritual traditions would complement and give them deeper understanding, the ones who learn the exoteric side see they are opposites and in contrast to one another. As for esotericist, instead of claiming that only one religion contains the truth or is the only true religion, an esotericist would study many religions and look for spiritual principles that are common to all and transcend the truth of any one religion (that explanation fits perfectly for me)
Exoteric side of a religion/spiritual tradition naturally differs with the esoteric side of that same religion/spiritual practice, since the circle of students who happened to only touch the exoteric side of the religion/spiritual practice are not in depth of understanding of the very essence of that religion/spiritual practice, which is why called exoteric teachings, which literally means the outer teachings! By not being in essence of it, there tends to arise many ambiguity, misleads, and misinformation. This is also added by considering the teachings that were touched by passerby, people who came just out of curiosity, people who just come-and-go, people who are not devoted deeply enough to the pursuit of truth, people not serious enough, common uneducated/insincere people; are the exoteric teachings. Therefore, we can understand now how likely exoteric teachings are prune to external impurities.
What are then forms of esoterism in religion/spiritual practice? Islam have the Sufi tradition as their esoteric side, which is ultimately very different with the common Islam philosophy. The Christianity have the Gnostics, the Judaism have Kabballah, Chinese healing arts/martial arts obviously have their own esoteric paths, Tibetian Buddhism's Esoterics, Zen Buddhism Patriach-tical Lineage, Ancient Mystery Religions, Freemansory, Theosophy (read my particular post about my encounter with Theosophy here), and many others. As what i have mentioned, they all share a common root, which is truth, truth is universal, no matter which one of them we peer into.
Me being in direct pursuit of truth and being an esotericist myself, have studied various religions/spiritual tradition's esoteric side, and yet have not so far found them incompatible to one another. Rather, i found them like pieces of puzzle making the big picture clearer and clearer by their different angle of perspective. I kept finding them fitting one into another, complements one with another. Even greater than that, i found how each of those esoteric teachings goes along and compatible as well with science.
Now this many kind of various esotericism, modern people often also term them 'spirituality', for the fact that spirituality also means to find the common thread of teachings and principles that applies universally to any religion and is in accordance to truth. While, on the scientific world, scientist are growing more interest on quantum physics, that branch of physics pioneered by Einstein thoughts . They work delving into the realm of subatomic particles, puzzled by the many mysteries of the subatomic particle that seems to defy the 'natural law' that they used to think, which happens to be in accordance with the mysteries of the so-called 'supernatural'. In this wonderful era, we shall see both religion and science are moving closer to each other, they will soon eventually emerge upon our constant pursuit of truth.
To sum up, here are some of the principles that constitutes almost every esoteric side of a religion/spiritual tradition:
1. Love is the strongest force in the universe. We are made of love, surrounded by love, and will return as love into love. (In fact, love=God=life=nature, those words are interchangeable with one another)
2. Divinity is to be search within (meditation, contemplation, listening to nature, etc), not outside. The search of truth is into the self, not outside to the world.
3. The Supreme (God) does not take form of an entity, but is the sea of love where we live in, therefore He/She is everywhere, and we are made of the same substance of it, which is, Love.
4. Who we are is not our body, not our mind, nor not our personality nor characters. Who we are resides in the infinite and eternal, having a dream of finiteness and the ever changing.
And the list goes on and on...
If you feels all these principles rings true to your heart, then i would encourage you even more to pursuit your own truth. Nobody can grant you or give you truths, you must seek it yourself, others are just guides.
To the pursuit of truth!!! Cheers!!
