The Embarrasing Truth
October 8th 2006 08:53
This week has again marked a sad day in the U.S. A crazed gunman walked into an Amish school and killed 5 innocent school girls, the motives behind the shooting are unapparent as they usually are but it was an obvious attack on a group of victims who live in the purest of societies. The Amish are a people who like to seclude themselves from the daily grind in a colony environment where basic needs like a TV are simply not a necessity.
If one was to research the shooting for some information on how this guy approached his prey, the evidence is pretty damning. He was carrying three guns, a shotgun, a rifle and a semi-automatic not to mention he had 600 rounds of ammunition sitting in his car!! What is the guy down the street doing with that much ammo?? He’s ready for a war not 5 young children who live in an Amish community. I have never been to the U.S and live in a society where you can go for a walk at night without feeling threatened. I’m assuming Pennsylvania and that particular rural town must be quite dangerous.
To me its sounding warning bells on the crazy gun laws they have in the country. If you look back over the years and the number of shootings that have taken place in schools, shopping centres and the like, one has to question the severity of guns and the lack of accountability from members of the community. In 2003 there were 11,920 Homicides in the U.S (State Illinois Council against Handgun Violence) while 80 million people own a gun which is absurd when the population of the country is 295 million, almost one third of the nation carries a firearm.
The stem of the problem starts with the leaders of the country, gun and rifle associations happen to provide a lot of the funding for political parties across the nation, labelling the problem as incurable unless the leaders of these parties start condemning the use of guns. In a society full of violence this would be a practical solution considering the amount of violent attacks from members of the general population. They’re not breeding an army but a culture where firearms are dominating their existence.
