The Dutch's Magic Ban
November 29th 2008 23:42
We all knew the Dutch liked their cannabis and that in a sense it was 'legal'! You couldn't smoke in public, for instance, because you wouldn't want to corrupt the children, the future potheads. What I didn't know is that the Dutch also liked magic mushrooms which were in a sense 'legal'.
Starting next week, magic mushrooms will be banned in the Netherlands. The Dutch are trying to shed their 'anything goes' image, and at this point I say, "Good Luck with that!" They want to project the dangerous behavioral effects of the magic mushroom, thus proving their hypocrisy.
My guess is that the strip-searches of tourists returning to their own countries after visiting the Netherlands is bringing tourism down. If it was the government that allowed the use of cannabis, mushrooms, etc., shouldn't the government be responsible for inflicting health problems on their citizens? Don't hold your breath on proving that point.
It will be very interesting to see how much of a new image the Netherlands project when they ban a lifestyle that its citizens have grown accustomed to. To tell druggies to go cold turkey is unlikely to get a positive reaction. Pot isn't addicting but the pot smoker never quits...
