The difference between gay marriage and equal rights
January 9th 2007 01:32
I'm all for letting people just be people but sometimes I wonder how far we can let people be who they feel to be before there are serious repercussions. I was watching a US current affairs programme where the host had on a gay rights activist who wants all the same rights for gays that heterosexual married couples have. (Whats that sound? Why do I hear blades being sharpened?)
Let me say this I'm not a complete homophobe. On the other hand I am not here to pander to any segment of the community either. Thats not my job. I don't condone their lifestyle, yet I tolerate it. Where I was born, if you're gay then you have to keep it to yourself. I remember hearing how the gay community wanted to organize a gay pride march and the day of the march a group of men had gathered with sticks, stones, machetes, broken bottles and some of those apparently were police who had changed into regular clothes. Not surprisingly the march was called off. I had a female tell me she would not listen to Elton John because of his lifestyle. Then again some of the best known singers from there have been banned from performing overseas because they've been deemed to be inciting anit-gay sentiment. I am moderate by comparison and I wouldn't go as far as my countrymen. People can do what they like behind closed doors. I don't give a damn. I just don't believe in gay marriage, just as I don't believe in fornication or adultery.
What really got me upset is that gays have compared their "struggle" for equal rights to the non-whites fight for equal rights. I find it insulting and demeaning because if someone is coloured they have no choice but to be that... coloured whether they are olive skinned or they have a complexion like dark chocolate they were born into that skin. I believe that we all have a choice as to who we get into bed with, whether it's a man or a woman. We all do have that choice. Are gays so led by their hormones that they can't help themselves from jumping into bed with someone of the same sex?
I don't ever remember reading in any of my history books (and I am a history major) where gays were actively enslaved, whipped, beaten, tortured, sold like animals, not given the right to vote (or if they were they were threatened with death), not allowed to go into certain areas without having ID or have the police being called, being forced to go to the different schools where education is poorer, drink from different water coolers, being refused service in shops and restaurants or being pulled over for driving a nice vehicle. Has anyone ever been pulled over for being gay? If someone has could you let me know. I bet gays don't have the experience of having little old ladies clutch their purses a little tighter to their chest as someone of a darker complexion approaches. The saddest thing is that in a white society someone who is of a darker complexion can never hide. So where is the struggle really? Because they can't get their way of full acceptance for their lifestyle, they're going to throw a tantrum fit for a queen (no pun intended)? Their plight pales in comparison to the struggle for "equal rights" long fought for and not yet even won by non-whites! Gays should be thankful and happy for the lives they can lead without feeling the need to get married.
Marriage was meant to be the basic family unit of a man and a woman where they were meant to procreate inside of marriage to give stability and balance to not only a child or children but to society as well. Without that basic family unit then what does society have to build on to teach proper values and morals? I do believe that each parent gives certain attributes that the other can't provide or can't provide as well as the other. Its what I'd like to think of as the "ying" and the "yang". Not two "yings" and not two "yangs". One "ying" and one "yang". With two "yings" or two "yangs" it throws nature out of balance. In the end I can't see any self respecting Minister of God can really stand in front of two people of the same sex and marrying them as if it's the normal thing to do. Then again I can't see God condoning any of this either but then again what do I know?

personally, I love fornication. I think fornication is the key to healthy living.
as for cruelty towards homosexuals, there's been examples of violence towards homosexuals throughout history. Read this article.
In fact, it's still punishable by death in some countries.
You're right about one thing - it's tougher to hide your skin colour than your sexual orientation, but it's a double edged sword. Ethnic people can easily find each other, but people of alternative sexualities are often isolated.

Specifically who?
What asbout a J.O.P?
I genuinely find this whole arguement offensisive. I'm not gay, but I had cancer, which might have messed up my sperm, so i might not be able to have kids. Does this mean i forfeit my right to get married because it's just a way for me to have well ballenced children?
